Steps To Take If You’ve Experienced Sexual Abuse

5) Identify A Confidante: You should have at least one person who you feel totally comfortable discussing the situation with, be it a trained professional or a family member. You may need someone to remind you, perhaps daily, that what happened to you was not your fault. Sexual abuse is a traumatic experience that may have lifelong repercussions…it isn’t the sort of thing most people can manage all alone. You may have to talk to a few people before you find that trusted person; not everyone can be empathetic in these situations and as our culture allows for a lot of misnomers about assault, it’s possible that even a usually reasonable person can be all the way wrong when faced with your story (particularly if they have a relationship with the person who harmed you.)
