Red October Has Landed! Kanye West’s New Nike Sneakers Sellout–And Then Hit Ebay For $16M
It’s finally been a good week for Kanye West.
Not only is he celebrating the 10th anniversary of his dynamic debut CD, The College Dropout, but his new $245 sneakers are a hit. A surprise, since West parted ways with Nike, opting to partner with Adidas instead. On Sunday at 1 p.m. EST, without any pre-promotion and via Twitter Nike debuted West’s new Air Yeezy 2 sneakers and the shoe sold out in 10 minutes and almost immediately started to pop up on eBay and other sites going for outrageous amounts.
“The most eye-popping asking price thus far is the £10,000 (about $16.4 million) UK-based eBay auction — a figure that’s slightly higher than the entire 2013 GDP of the country of Georgia,” reports The Huffington Post
A site in the U.S. was auctioning the shoes for $15,000. And there are plenty of bidders.
According to Pitchfork, the shoes are hot since the Air Yeezy 2 is probably the rapper’s last product under his Nike deal. West wasn’t pleased with the way Nike was doing business. He told Morning Riot, “Nike will tell store owners, ‘Okay, if you want these Red Octobers, you gotta take these ten other Nike’s.'” The original Air Yeezy hit stores in 2009.
No matter how you cut it, West has another hit on his hands.
