Deaf Super Bowl Player, Derrick Coleman, Surprises Two Fans With Tickets

January 31, 2014  |

Seattle Seahawks player, Derrick Coleman, earned quite a bit of attention when he starred in a Duracell commercial that let millions of fans know that he was playing the sport legally deaf. If you haven’t seen it, it’s quite beautiful and it led to him becoming a viral star on YouTube with his video receiving over 12 million plays. Coleman is the NFL’s first legally deaf player and the Duracell commercial and his efforts on the field inspired two nine year old twin girls who share his disability to send him a fan letter.

After the Seattle Seahawks defeated the San Francisco 49ers to make the Super Bowl, Coleman received a letter from a 9 year old girls Riley and Erin Kovalcik from New Jersey. Riley wrote:

” I know how you feel. I also have hearing aids. Just try your best. I have faif [faith] in you.”

The girls’ father decided to tweet the letter to Coleman because he was so delighted that his children will now have a role model who they can relate to. He said, “There’s not a whole lot of really high-profile or even athletes out there that are deaf that kids like RIley and Erin can look up to…that show that if you work hard, adversity really doesn’t matter,” Kovalcik said when he and his daughters appeared on “Good Morning America.”

Coleman responded to the girls with a letter he posted on Twitter. It read:

Dear Miss. Kovalcik,

Thanks for the letter. Really was great hearing from a friend who I have so much in common with. I appreciate you rooting for the Seahaws and me and hope you continue to do so when we play in the Superbowl!!!

I want you to know that I always try my best in everything I do and have faith in you and your twin sister too. Even though we wear hearing aids, we can still accomplish our goals and dreams! If you or your family [are] ever in Seattle, I hope we can all get together and play some sports or games!

Take Care,

Derrick Coleman

But Coleman took it a step further and on “Good Morning America,” he surprised them with two tickets to this Sunday’s Superbowl game.
