Remember the Cheerios commercial featuring an interracial family (husband, wife, daughter) that first aired in May? It caused such outrage that the company had to shut the comments section on its website. There were others who were happy to see such a family depicted. In that commercial the black father never even appeared in the same shot as the white mother, and still there was backlash.
So it will be curious to see the reaction when the same characters appear in another Cheerios commercial, this one set to air during the Super Bowl. Will folks drop their nachos when in the commercial, the father over a breakfast of Cheerios informs his daughter a brother is on the way? (It’s already been released online. Check it out above.)
The new ad is called “Gracie” and will run during the first unscheduled time out of Super Bowl XLVIII, reports Business Insider. The commercial was crafted by Saatchi & Saatchi New York, the same ad agency that also made the earlier Cheerios commercial, which was called “Just Checking.”
The folks at Cheerios seemed to have opened the commerial world to diversity. If you haven’t seen it yet, a new Swiffer commercial features an interracial family with a dad who’s also an amputee. “Some are calling the ad inclusive. Others say the fact that people are so surprised by an ad with an amputee shows that America hasn’t come far enough,” notes ABC News. The family has appeared on television before, but it’s still a rarity.
