They Always Come Back: The Former Flames Of Famous Folks Who Spoke Out For Attention

- By

Alanis Morisette and David Coulier

“You Oughta Know” is the ultimate angry white girl jam, and it’s one of my favorites, but who knew it was about Uncle Joey from Full House? At least, that’s what he claimed. Dave Coulier says he was newly divorced father of two when he started dating the much younger singer, pre her Jagged Little Pill days. When things didn’t work and he left her to be with someone around his own age, he says “You Oughta Know” came out of anger from that. YEARS after the song came out, he decided to talk about it for attention in 2008 to the Calgary Sun, and discussed the first time he heard the song:

“I said, ‘Wow, this girl is angry (when he first heard the song while driving).’ And then I said, ‘Oh man, I think it’s Alanis,'” Coulier revealed. “I listened to the song over and over again, and I said, ‘I think I have really hurt this person.'”

When asked if the song was indeed about Coulier, Morissette responded with, “I write these songs for myself, not other people.”
