Oakland Mother Loses Both Of Her Sons To Gun Violence In A Span Of 19 Days
Really sad news to share. In Oakland, a mother has lost both of her sons in a span of 19 days to gun violence. Dinyal New just buried her 13-year-old son, Lee Weathersby III, last week, and this week, her oldest son was gunned down in the streets with his best friend.
Lee Weathersby, reportedly known as a good student and athlete, was shot multiple times on New Year’s Eve as he left a Boys and Girls Club in Oakland after 9 p.m. At a vigil for the teen, New spoke out about her pain:
“They shot my baby like a dog. And to the people who did this, I hope you suffer.”
Sadly, her last living son, Lamar Broussard, faced a similar sad end. The 19-year-old was gunned down on Sunday after being ambushed, just 19 days after losing Weathersby. The grieving mother spoke to the media again, but this time she’s asking not for folks to suffer. Instead, she is asking for people to speak up so she can obtain justice through the courts and for parents to take better care of their children so that they’re not out here taking the lives of innocent people:
“Hopefully the community and people will come forward because how can a mother experience this? Two losses within 19 days of both of her kids? It’s horrible.
Somebody’s failing these kids and they just feel like it’s okay to murder somebody and have no remorse or understanding afterwards.
What I do ask is for no retaliation at all. I want to see this in the courts. I want retaliation through the court system. So please, no retaliation.”
What’s even more sad that is in the initial video about the death of Weathersby, a woman named Tameka Rothchild can be seen speaking to the crowd about saying something if people know about what happened in order to protect the kids. This same woman’s son was shot and killed alongside Broussard on Sunday, as the boys were best friends.
“I love my son, and unfortunately people out here are heartless. They don’t have no morals. They don’t have no type of values. They don’t care about a human being.”
All of this is just absolutely heartbreaking. I’ll be keeping these women in my prayers, as well as the youth in general, because they need a hedge of protection out here.
