I can’t even begin to imagine the elation one must feel being released from prison. And while I personally hope to never know it, I’m so glad CeCe McDonald is getting to experience that feeling today.
We’ve been covering CeCe McDonald for two years now. But in case you’re not familiar CeCe is the transgender woman who was sentenced to 41 months in a male prison for killing a man as she attempted to defend herself against his assault. Her name started recirculating in the media when we learned Laverne Cox, the trans actress from the series “Orange Is The New Black,” announced that she would be co-producing a documentary about McDonald and her unjust imprisonment.
In the most recent article we wrote about CeCe, we reported that she may be released today. And luckily, the information was accurate.
All of this began on a Minneapolis street back in 2011. A man named Dean Schmitz hurled racial and transgender slurs at McDonald. Eventually, Schmitz threw glass against CeCe’s face. From there the fight escalated and CeCe stabbed Schmitz to death. Originally, CeCe claimed she attacked Schmitz out of self defense but in order to receive a plea deal, she retracted her initial statement. CeCe was sentenced to 41 months in the male prison. She was released before she served her full term.
Friends of CeCe’s posted pictures of her release from the Minnesota Correctional Facility on their Facebook pages. Check the pictures out below.

Nice to see that Laverne Cox was there for her when she got out. Love all of it!
