First Daughter Of New York: Chiara de Blasio Does Chic Spread For Teen Vogue

December 31, 2013  |

At 19, most folks are just trying to keep their head above water in their college courses, find a decent part time job to pay a few bills and support a shopping addiction, or, with today’s 19-year-olds (like my niece), they’re trying to find a pose and duck lip that looks best in their selfies. But Chiara de Blasio is not your average 19-year-old. The vegetarian and heavy metal lover is the daughter of New York’s newest mayor, Bill de Blasio, and she just so happens to be a young woman who’s not shying away from all the media attention, instead, using it for good. Just this month she did something of a PSA on YouTube about overcoming depression and drug abuse, something she dealt with over the years and sought treatment for. Both her style and her strength are getting her recognized by a lot of people, including Teen Vogue!

The 19-year-old, with her freeform locs, pierces and gauges in her ear showed off her style in a spread for the magazine, and talked about why she decided to open up about her past substance use and depression, why she’s not about that social media life, and what she thinks her dad will able to do for New York once the Bloomberg era ends.

Why She Opened Up About Her Past Struggles:

It’s part of my temperament to be very straightforward, very blunt, very honest. My parents always stressed communication as a really important part of any relationship. When I was younger, I didn’t want to tell them everything—I have my teenage secrets—but they taught me that honesty is the best policy in any situation.

Why You Won’t Find Her On Social Media:

I think technology in general has brought a lot of positive things, but it’s preventing people from really being in the moment, living the lives they would otherwise be living. It’s good when it’s utilized well. Obviously a lot of social justice issues have gotten more attention because of social media!

Her Hopes For Her Dad As New York’s New Mayor:

My dad has this really grand, bold vision for change in the city. He’s interested in changing things in a big way, rather than focusing in on narrow little issues. You can treat the symptoms or you can treat the actual problem, and my dad’s treating the actual problems. As he says, New York City is a place where everybody should be able to have a chance. I think once we make changes, a lot of places will follow because other cities look to New York as a leader. This could have a huge impact on American society overall if done right.

She’s so mature, right? Check out the rest of the interview and photos from the photo shoot over at Teen Vogue. We have a few of the chic snaps below…
