Woman Walks Off Pier And Almost Drowns While Checking Facebook On Her Phone

In crazy world news…

A Taiwanese woman, who was a tourist in the Australian city of Melbourne, received the wake-up call of her life when she accidentally walked off of a pier and almost drowned. Why did this happen? Because she was too distracted with checking her Facebook page on her phone to be aware of her surroundings.

According to reports, the woman was walking on the St. Kilda pier around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, rifling through her news feed, “engrossed in social media,” and because she wasn’t paying attention to where she was walking, homegirl ended up walking off the pier and fell into the very vast Port Phillip Bay. Luckily for her, police were able to jump in and save the woman after being alerted by a witness. The tourist was located about 20 meters away from the pier.

The interesting thing that was pointed out by numerous outlets, including the BBC, was that in all of this the woman NEVER let go of her phone during this traumatic experience. The woman was reportedly not able to swim, yet she managed to keep one hand around her obviously water-damaged phone as she struggled in the bay. According to the The Herald Sun, she was taken to the hospital for treatment but will be okay.

Wow. This dependance on all this new technology and social media is really having people out here about to die over social media. I’ve seen people hit their heads on gates and doors, trip and fall, and even fall in ditches while engrossed in their phones, and that was crazy enough to me, but that’s nothing like almost drowning because you were trying to check your notifications. C’mon now…
