All Good Things Must Come To An End: 2013’s Saddest Celebrity Breakups

There was a lot of great celebrity news to come out of 2013. But, unfortunately, not everything was sunshine and roses. A number of notable couples called it a quits this year. From two Kardashian relationships coming to an end to some longtime lovers parting ways, we take a look at some of the saddest celebrity breakups of the past 12 months.

Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom

One of 2013’s most disappointing stories centered on the trials and tribulations of Khloe Kardashian and her husband Lamar Odom. While the two seemed to have had one of the healthiest celebrity relationships we had seen for a pair who jumped the broom after dating for three months, this year Lamar’s battle with drug abuse came to the forefront … and so did the issues in the couple’s relationship, including possible infidelity. Separation rumors swirled, but it wasn’t until Khloe filed for divorce in December that the severity of the couple’s troubles came to light.

Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs

Now this one definitely broke our hearts. After 10 years of marriage, Broadway star Idina Menzel and actor Taye Diggs decided to separate. The couple met in the mid-90s when they both starred in the Broadway production of “Rent.” The two had always been relatively open about their relationship, with Idina even telling People: “We work at [our relationship]. I’m not going to glamorize it or glorify it — we go through tough times like everybody else, but we love each other very much. We try not to be away from each other for more than two weeks at a time, and we try to find new ways to communicate.” It’s a longshot, but we definitely have our fingers crossed these two can work things out.

Regina King and Malcolm Jamal-Warner

Regina King and Malcolm Jamal-Warner ended their two-year relationship early in 2013. While the couple had largely kept their personal life on the low, the break-up was slightly less low-key. A source told US Weekly, “They knew each other forever and then out of nowhere he dumped her. She’s still confused and hurt and doesn’t know what happened.” So sad.

Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom

Another breakup that really broke our hearts this year was the separation of drop-dead gorgeous Miranda Kerr and her longtime beau Orlando Bloom. The two started dating in 2007 and were married in July 2010. They welcomed a son, Flynn, in January 2011. And though the two revealed that they had been separated for some time, Miranda told UK’s The Mirror that she and Orlando “… still love and care for each other deeply. I didn’t go home to Australia recently because Orlando was working six days a week in Romeo and Juliet on Broadway and it’s not fair to take Flynn and go without him. We’re trying to do our best to support each other.” Flynn seems to be one lucky little boy.

Zoe Saldana and Bradley Cooper

It was discovered earlier in 2013 that the on-again, off-again couple threw in the towel after two years of dating just in time for the holidays. While we were sad to see Zoe Saldana and Bradley Cooper call it a quits, we were definitely impressed that the two seemed to move on so quickly. Zoe, in particular, didn’t waste any time getting back in action. In fact, it would only be a few months layer that she would secretly marry Italian artist Marco Perego in England. You do your thing, girl!

Kris and Bruce Jenner

Now if you’ve ever watched an episode of “Keeping up with the Kardashians,” then this was probably one of the least surprising developments in 2013. Kris and Bruce Jenner, after 22 years of marriage, announced their separation in October 2013. “We are living separately and we are much happier this way,” the couple said in a joint statement. “But we will always have much love and respect for each other. Even though we are separated, we will always remain best friends and, as always, our family will remain our number one priority.” Though the two seem to still truly care about each other, we would really be surprised if Bruce relinquished his Malibu freedom and returned home.

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth

There was definitely one person who wasn’t on-board with all of Miley Cyrus’ insanity this year: Her fiance Liam Hemsworth. After meeting on the set of their movie “The Last Song” in 2010, it took about three years for Liam to pop the question to then-19-year-old Miley. And while things appeared to be going well, the couple hit a rough patch over the past several months, with rumors swirling about possible cheating and short breakups. One would also have to imagine that Miley’s radical transformation this year probably didn’t make things much better. This is one relationship we’re not too broken up over. These two folks probably need some time to themselves for a little while.

Chelsea Handler and Andre Balazs

Dammit, Chelsea. We had such high hopes that the comedienne and late-night personality would finally meet her match in hotelier Andre Balazs. But unfortunately the funny lady confirmed the pair had split while interviewing Mary McCormick on her show “Chelsea Lately”. Hmm, maybe the door is open for 50 Cent, again.

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas

Now there was a whole lot of buzz around Catherine Zeta-Jones and husband Michael Douglas this year. In August, the couple announced they were taking some time apart after more than a decade of marriage, with sources citing a number of factors (including the health struggles of both Catherine and Michael) as contributing to the split. However, this is one of the few breakup stories that seems to have a positive ending. Rumors are the two are trying to make their marriage work and we certainly hope they can find some common ground and be there for each other.

Nicole Scherzinger and Lewis Hamilton

Now we don’t even know where to begin with Nicole Scherzinger and Lewis Hamilton. The singer and Formula 1 racer have been on-again, off-again for more than five years and have one rejected proposal under their belt. So perhaps it wasn’t a huge surprise when they ended things this year. But apparently there is still a little magic between these two as rumors are swirling that the couple is giving it another go and could be poised for a New Year’s Eve engagement.

Alison Pill and Jay Baruchel

Now we bet Alison Pill wishes she hadn’t taken that topless selfie for boyfriend Jay Baruchel. The actress and her man ended their relationship after several years together. Unfortunately, the split didn’t come as much of a surprise. Jay had tweeted, “Alone again, naturally. Heartbroken” and “I won’t be on twitter for awhile gang. Getting dumped rules.” Just a thought folks, stay off Twitter when it comes to your love life. In happiness or in breakup-ness it can spell trouble.

Zoe Kravitz and Penn Badgley

After almost two years of dating, actors Zoe Kravitz and Penn Badgley ended their relationship. Insiders attributed the breakup to the age-old Hollywood issue: Zoe and Penn’s chaotic schedules. But, there appears to be some good news emerging from that June split. Zoe and Penn have been spotted out and about,  getting especially cozy in Rome this past September. But then again Zoe’s also been spotted slobbing down Drake.

Britney Spears and Jason Trawick

Will Britney Spears ever find love? The pop star has definitely been in her fair share of relationships over her more than a decade-long time in the spotlight, but things were actually looking bright for her and Jason Trawick. Unfortunately in January of this year, the two ended their courtship. But Brit certainly didn’t spiral out of control because of that love loss. During an appearance on “This Morning,” Britney said, “It was a hard break-up, but it wasn’t one of my hardest break-ups, but I definitely had some things to say in my album about it, so you’ll see. I wanted to do something that was a little more personal for my fans because I went through a lot this year and I wanted to share those personal moments with them.” Guess she’s making the best of a bad situation.

Ryan Seacrest and Julianne Hough

Now these two were just so cute it was almost unbearable. So it definitely broke our hearts a bit when Julianne Hough and Ryan Seacrest ended their relationship after three years of dating. While the exact reason remains a bit of a mystery, the hectic schedules of both parties seems to have played a large role. There’s also that pesky rumor Ryan isn’t really into the ladies.
