Being a black woman, in America and other parts of the world can often mean that you–we– don’t receive our just due. There is no shortage of ways in which we are disrespected and denigrated in our society by men, and quite frequently, other women. So it’s always especially nice when we get a chance to be celebrated. And we’re noticing that that happens a lot on the Melissa Harris Perry show. And this past Sunday was just another example of that. At the end of her show she featured a segment with poet, activist and educator Nikki Giovanni.
First, Giovanni discussed her works to date, including her new book “Chasing Utopia: A Hybrid” and then she read her poem “Ego-Tripping (there may be a reason why)” on the show. For those of you who aren’t familiar, the poem is a ode to richness of being black and female.
Get into it in the video below. And I’ll include the text on the page after just because it’s that good and I don’t want anything– not even a shotty internet connection– to cause you to miss out.
