Magic Johnson Talks About The Day He Found Out He Had HIV, E.J.’s Coming Out & Cookie

- By

Just yesterday, my coworkers were wondering why Cookie decided to stay with Magic after his HIV diagnosis. Was it because she wasn’t ready to leave the lap of luxury? I argued that of course it was because she truly loved the man. And highlights from their interview with Oprah’s Next Chapter prove that to be all too true. During the interview, the couple opened up and talked about Magic’s promiscuous ways when he was in the NBA, how he learned he was HIV positive and how he delivered the news to his wife of just two months… who was also pregnant with their son. Then after that, Cookie joins Magic as the two talk about their son’s sexuality and when they knew he was gay. And then lastly, in a video that jerked some tears out of me, Magic talks about the reasons why Cookie was and still is the perfect partner for him. Check out the transcript and videos from the interview on the following pages.

Magic’s promiscuity back in the day.

Oprah: Were you serious about any of them?

Magic: Oh, no. And they knew. And they wanted to be Miss. Johnson. I said uh uhh I only got one person who’s going to be Miss. Johnson. They were like ‘what?! why me? Who is that, who is she?!’ All those type of things. I said ‘oh no, I’m marrying this woman. When I get married, I’m marrying Cookie.” And they all knew that.

Oprah: But they still wanted to try.

Magic: Oh yeah. And hard.

Oprah: Did it ever even occur to you to use protected sex?

Magic: No, no. I think at that time it wasn’t a thing that everybody even talked about. Yeah, the eighties. It was a fun time. Everybody having sex, unprotected sex.

Oprah: With one or more women.

Magic: Oh yeah.

Oprah: I meant one or more at the same time.

Magic: At the same time, yes.

Oprah: How do end an evening, does the girl just leave?

Magic: Yes, and I wanted her to leave. It was more we had fun and then that was it. I didn’t have people sleep over. That wasn’t the thing for me. I never disrespected women though. I was always upfront. I wasn’t a guy who would mislead anybody. I think once you’re up front, I think they have to make a decision about what they want to do. So I think they made their decision.
