You all know we’ve had a love affair with Kevin McCall ever since he was our Man of the Moment this spring and the LA singer/songwriter and his beautiful girlfriend Eva Marcille are quickly becoming one of our favorite famous couples. Today Kevin is dropping an unexpected Christmas EP for his fans titled “Xmas Love” and we had a chance to chat with the baby making anthem maker about his latest project, how he plans to spend the holidays, and how excited he is to welcome a new bundle of joy in the new year. Kevin also told us a baby isn’t all he and Eva have in store. In fact, we might be hearing wedding bells very soon. Check out the details on all that as well as how Kevin feels about his friend and music partner Chris Brown entering rehab in our Q&A.
What inspired “XMas Love”?
A lot of times the industry shuts down in the winter and I just wanted to do a project where I could showcase my producing and my singing abilities. I’ve been studying a lot of Frank Sinatra and Donny Hathaway so I thought an album would be a good present for my fans.
What can we expect from the album?
I took traditional songs and put a twist on them to make them my own. I wanted to keep it at a level where everybody can play it. You can play it for your grandmother and you can also play it for your date on Christmas Eve.
I’ve been working on it for two weeks now. It didn’t take long at all. I just took my time with it and let it write itself and it came out real good, real fast. There aren’t any features, it’s all me. The idea came about so sporadically that a lot of people couldn’t get on it. I sent it to Trey Songz and he was down but he was out of town. Also Jhene [Aiko] is on Drake’s tour, but I was trying to send it to her people. So there were a couple of people who could’ve got on there but it’s just me. People won’t be missing anything though. I put a lot of hard work into it and I’m going to make it sound good.
What’s your favorite Christmas song?
My personal favorite song is the chestnuts roasting song. I like to hear people sing that; it really gets me in the mood. The Christmas mood I mean.
Have you written any songs about Eva or the baby?
I have a song called “‘Sunflower” that’s inspired by Eva and the baby. People might hear that later next year. There are a lot of songs inspired by Eva. My last mixtape [Sextape] was inspired by her and I had her on the intro. My songs are inspired by all kinds of stuff. My songs are inspired by my exes and how I’ve had to deal with them. But the “Sunflower” song really represents who she is to me. Y’all have to hear it.
How are you feeling about becoming a dad again?
I’m a little more wiser, a little more patient, a little less confused about things. I feel like I know what to do and can take on that provider stance and be a comforter and a dad.
What are you most looking forward to when the baby comes?
Eva’s due in less than two months. She’s due in January, so I’m most looking forward to the baby being well and being able to hold my child. I’m just going to cherish those days because they grow so fast.
Will we hear wedding bells soon?
Most definitely. That’s in the plans. When a man finds a wife he finds a good thing. That’s definitely in the plans.
How do you feel about Chris Brown entering rehab and how is he holding up?
I think he’s doing real well. I talked to him not too long ago and he seemed to be doing well. It’s always good to see on his better days and in better spirits, despite what I hear or see on TV. So to see first-hand that he’s doing well and feeling better about things is good to see. I just try to be an encouragement to him. I think he’s going to come out of the whole situation on top.
We certainly hope so. Check out “Merry Little Christmas (Without You),” one of the tracks from Kevin’s “XMas Love” EP, below. You can listen to the full album stream on Billboard.com. What do you think?
