Tika Sumpter Joins Viola Davis And Jill Scott For James Brown Biopic

It looks like the long awaited James Brown biographical film is beginning to take shape. Over the past few months, we’ve learned about several major castings for Get On Up. As previously reported, 42 actor Chadwick Boseman has been cast to play the Founding Father of Funk. Shortly after Chadwick’s casting, we learned that Octavia Spencer will be playing James’ Aunt Tunney, while her The Help co-star, Viola Davis, will be playing the late singer’s mother, Susie Brown. Of course, a James Brown biopic wouldn’t be complete if it didn’t touch on the singer’s interesting love life, so Baggage Claim actress and songbird, Jill Scott, has been cast to play one of James’ wives. Dreamgirls actor Keith Brown has also joined the all-star lineup. He will be playing Sweet Baby Boy, an original member of James’ band.

Get On Up casting directors appear to be in the final stages of casting. It was just announced today that Sparkle actress Tika Sumpter has joined the cast of the Universal film as well. According to Deadline, Tika will be playing Yvonne Fair, a singer in the James Brown Revue. Yvonne recorded the song “I Found You,” which later became his hit, “I Got You (I Feel Good).”

Get On Up is slated to hit theaters October 17, 2014.
