As Rihanna would say…NO BASIC ZONE! And she’s definitely proved that she’s anything but basic, as the 25-year-old Bajan pop star will be honored by the American Music Awards on Sunday, Nov. 24, with the Icon Award. She’s the first to ever get it, as it’s the first year the special merit award has been offered. So what exactly is the Icon Award? According to AMA Producer Larry Klein (via The Los Angeles Times), it was created for this purpose:
“The first-ever Icon Award was created to honor an artist whose body of work has made a profound influence over pop music on a global level. Rihanna’s iconic and innovative sound has enabled her to become one of the most influential and bestselling artists of all time.”
And let’s not front, Rihanna definitely has a major influence in pop music on a global level. She’s sold out shows in Spain, Portugal, Turkey, England, South Africa and more during her recent Diamonds World Tour, and according to Rap-Up, has sold more than 50 million albums and 180 million singles worldwide. She is currently the best-selling digital artist of all time. With only seven albums, you might think that pegging her as an “Icon” might be a bit much, but she has accomplished quite a great deal. As she would say, that Rihanna reign just won’t let up, and the Navy won’t let it.
Rihanna will perform at the show live and collect her award at 8 p.m. on ABC. Other performers include Jennifer Lopez, Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar, TLC, Katy Perry and more. The collective of Navy fans was very excited at the news about their queen picking up the Icon Award, while some others were critical of her receiving such an honor so fast (“Where are the awards for the “MEN”/woman who been in the game for 20 plus years?”). But what do you think?
Either way, congratulations!
