‘It’s All Wonderful, But I Try To Stick To The Work:’ Kerry Washington Shares How She Remains Humble
Kerry Washington is on top of the world right now. She has a hit primetime TV show, a booming acting career, a handsome new hubby and possibly, a new baby on the way. The 36-year-old is certainly Hollywood’s “it” girl—something that’s made evident by the overwhelming number of magazines she’s covered in the past year. During a recent appearance on the Ellen Degeneres Show, the blushing new bride laughed it up as Ellen spoofed her zillion and one magazine covers.
“I’ll go through it really fast, but you’re on the cover of every single magazine right now. It’s like a stack of magazines!” Ellen said going through a large pile of magazines with Kerry on the cover.
In true Ellen fashion, the first few magazines were real publications that Kerry has actually covered, but as she dug deeper into the pile, a few spoofed magazine covers were pulled out as well, including Knitting Week, Chess Masters and Pantsuit Monthly—which Kerry joked that she is the Editor-in-chief of— and Kale Quarterly. Despite all of the accolades she has received and the magazines that she has covered, the Bronx native seems to remain relatively humble. She revealed to Ellen that she does this by refusing to get caught up in her own hype.
“I put her [my mother] in charge of all of that [storing magazine’s I’ve covered] because early on, I figured I might have a grandchild one day who wants to see this stuff, but I don’t want to live with this stuff in my house. So I send it all to my mother and she archives it. She gets to be proud of it. They put them in like plastic folders and things, so they’re good after there’s a meteor shower and people find them” the Scandal actress joked.
She adds that she tries not to get too caught up on neither the good or the bad things that are being said about her, that way she’s isn’t affected either way.
“I think if you focus on the good stuff, then when the bad stuff comes you have to take that to be true also. It’s all wonderful, but I just try to stick to the work. When you have jobs like ours, it’s easy to stick to the work.”
We certainly can’t blame you, Kerry! Folks will love you today and hate you tomorrow.
