Celebs Who Got Engaged After Leaving A Long-Term Love

If you’ve ever been with a guy, and after dating him for a long while you break up and he proposes to the next chick, you’re not alone. It happens all the time, and many of us are left wondering, ‘why did I have to be the one before THE ONE?’ But men, both everyday Joe’s and famous fellas too, do things like this, and some ladies do too. They won’t get to commit to one guy, but in the interest of wanting to get married and start a family (and believing in “happily ever after”), will marry the next guy they meet. Need examples? Here are nine celebs who got engaged right after they left a long-time love.

Big Sean

Rapper Big Sean dated long-time love Ashley Marie from the time he was 16 up until early this year. She rode with him while he tried to get his career off the ground, and was there when it took off, but after many years together, he split with Ashley and got cozy with celebrity crush, Naya Rivera. The two started dating in April and Big Sean popped the question last month after just six months of dating.

Lamar Odom

After more than a decade together and three children (including one who passed of SIDS), baller Lamar Odom and love Liza Morales went their separate ways. The split was heartbreaking considering all that Morales had been through with Odom, including allegedly getting engaged to him in 2000. After all that time, Odom started dating Khloe Kardashian and the two got married after dating for a month in 2009. When speaking on her pain over learning of his brief engagement and marriage in an open letter, Morales had this to say:

I don’t think I’ll forget the tight knot I felt in the pit of my stomach the morning I received the text message with three simple words on the screen. It read “I’m getting married”…How could the man who’d constantly given me reason after reason for why we couldn’t get married just yet now be ready to tie the knot so quickly? There aren’t words to explain how I felt that day.

Kevin Federline

After dating “Moesha” star Shar Jackson for a while and getting engaged to her, Kevin Federline separated from her in 2004. The couple had two children together, including daughter Kori (born in 2002) and son Kaleb (born in 2004, right after they split). But soon after leaving Jackson, Federline started dating pop star Britney Spears. The two got engaged just three months after they started dating, and Shar Jackson was very hurt by their union, saying it “wasn’t like just breaking up a relationship. It was like breaking up a family.” But of course, that marriage ended by 2007.

Chris Bosh

Chris Bosh reportedly dated ex-girlfriend Allison Mathis from 2002 to 2008, right before his career started in the NBA and before he started winning championships with the Miami Heat. The two were together during his struggle years in Toronto and had a little girl together named Trinity in 2008, but they split and he started dating Adrienne Williams (who we later found out used to mess with Lil Wayne) in 2009 while the former couple was battling over paternity issues and child support. By mid-2010 he popped the question and the couple were married in 2011. They had their first child together, Jackson, in May of 2012, and their second child, daughter Dylan, who was born on November 4 (yesterday!).

J. Lo

Diddy and J. Lo were Hip-Hop’s big couple in the late ’90s. When she dropped her first album, he was there, and when she caught everyone’s eye in that Versace dress with the plunging neckline, he was right by her side. But after he almost got into major trouble for being involved in a shooting at a nightclub in New York, she was there…for a little while, and then ditched the relationship in 2001. Soon after, J. Lo started dating back-up dancer Cris Judd that same year and was married to him by fall of 2001. That marriage ended in summer of 2002, and she started dating Ben Affleck RIGHT after…the cycle continues to this day.

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian was really hoping to get a ring from Reggie Bush. After all, that was her strongest relationship, with the couple being together off and on from 2007 to 2010. But after they couldn’t make things work, Kim started dating NBA baller Kris Humphries in 2010 and by May of 2011, the couple were engaged. You would think that Kim wanted that to be her “happily ever after,” but after 72 days of marriage, she filed for divorce and ran for the hills. She couldn’t even wait for the ink on her papers to dry before she started dating Kanye West…

Stevie J

So what does a woman get after 15 years of standing by a man on and off? If you’re Mimi Faust,  you get a beautiful child, but also a lot of disrespect. When we met Faust and Stevie J in season one of Love and Hip Hop Atlanta, they seemed like a happy couple, but then we quickly realized that he was getting it in with his artist Joseline Hernandez (even getting her pregnant at one point before she had an abortion). When Mimi finally realized she was tired of Stevie’s crap, he went off and tried to have a committed relationship with Joseline. She proposed to him, and though he played her on the second season’s finale, after the show went on break, the two reportedly did get married after seeing a justice of the peace.

Zoe Saldana

After about 11 years together and an engagement that took place in June of 2010, Zoe Saldana and long-time actor boo Keith Britton went their separate ways. He was with her around the time she had her first film role (anybody else remember Center Stage?) and was there when she blew up big time after Avatar. After they broke up she tried to date Hollywood hottie Bradley Cooper on and off for a little while, but found love with Italian artist Marco Perego. Perego and Saldana married in June of this year after they started dating in April.

Peter Gunz

This hot mess of a love triangle right here…Rapper Peter Gunz had a relationship with wholesome Love and Hip Hop NY co-star Tara for 13 years, and the two have two children together. But while pretending to be all lovey-dovey and happy with her, he decided to have a relationship with his artist, Amina, formerly of the group Black Buddafly. Not only that, but he married the singer on the low-low, which will be revealed to Tara next week. Amina and Peter, according to Amina, have been together for only a year and a half, yet she’s the one with a ring…oh yeah, and a pretty terrible tattoo that says “Mrs. Pankey,” which is his last name.
