Capitol Hill Driver, Miriam Carey, Suffered From Postpartum Depression

October 4, 2013  |

Yesterday, we reported that law enforcement opened fire on the steps of the Capitol when a reckless driver rammed into gates near the White House and injured a police officer. We were wondering who was this woman and what was her story. Unfortunately, we never got to hear it straight from the source as law enforcement shot and killed the driver, who has now been identified as Miriam Carey. Many of you asked yesterday why this woman would have her child in the car with her as she went on this rampage.

Today, we learned that Miriam Carey was a 34 year old dental hygienist from Connecticut was suffering from postpartum depression. If you’re not familiar with the disorder, it often causes women to want to injury or harm themselves or their children. Jill Scott admitted once that her post partum depression made her want to give her baby back and then there was one moment where she wanted to throw him in the pool. It’s a real thing despite those who beg to differ, looking at you Tom Cruise.

Thankfully, Carey’s one year old daughter was removed from the car uninjured but was taken to the hospital as a precaution and placed in protective custody.

Authorities who inspected Carey’s condo could not seem to find a motive behind her erratic behavior. They spoke to Carey’s mother Idella Carey who told ABC News, though she had no history of violence, she had been ill. “A few months later, she got sick. She was depressed … She was hospitalized.”

Carey’s former boss, Dr. Brian Evans explained that she fell down a flight of stars and suffered from a significant head injury.

Evans said Carey was fired last year and had a temper. He recalled an incident where she became angry when she was asked to stop parking in a handicapped parking spot at the medical building.

Barry Weiss, Carey’s employer at the time of her death, said that though she could be headstrong at times, there was never any indication in her behavior that she would do something like this.

If you’re still confused about exactly what happened yesterday, you can watch a portion of the chase (nothing graphic) on the next page.
