Two Worlds Collide: Designer Rick Owens Brings Step Teams To The Runway

September 27, 2013  |

There has been no shortage of criticism about the lack of diversity on fashion runways. So kudos to American-born designer, Rick Owens who debuted his Spring 2014 collection last night with flare. Owens recruited predominately black sororities from the United States to step on the runway during Paris Fashion Week.

The models and dancers wore monochromatic outfits that are in tune with Owens’ “luxury goth” movement. And beyond the racial diversity, all of the models would be considered plus-sized by fashion model standards. And instead of wearing the blank, dead expressions that models have come to be known for, these women wore the customary mean-mug required for all good steppers. Cuteness be damned.

The end result was a show that was unforgettable and has gained international attention. It’s different, it’s entertaining and it displays the clothes in an entirely different way. It pushed the envelope without exploiting. We love it!

Check out some pictures from the show and watch the entire video at the end.
