Solange Knowles has never really been one to follow the rules set in place by society, instead, she creates her own. During a recent interview with Necole Bitchie, the “Lovers In The Parking Lot” singer revealed that she makes her own rules when it comes to the game of love too.
“I’ve been in a relationship now for five years. Certainly, in the beginning I was the one who approached him so I have always sort of historically been one of those girls that goes after something that I’m into,” the 27-year-old said.
“I’m not very old school in the like, I’m gonna wait on you to approach me type of situation. I have a lot of guy-like quintessential relationship qualities that I have had to work on.”
The Saint Records founder also discussed writing music for her big sister, Beyoncé.
“The part about songwriting that I love is that I wouldn’t necessarily sing [the songs] myself. [It’s a] really fun expression of myself in a another way.”
“I actually wrote “Why Don’t You Love Me” for my sister and it was one of those things where I had just been in a relationship situation where I was just not getting it and then it just came very naturally. I was just like, sonically this just doesn’t really work for me so there are those situations where I have an artist in mind, whether they sing it or not.”
She also expressed an interest in having Mariah Carey sing some of the songs she’s written.
“I have a ton of songs that I would just kill for Mariah Carey to sing. And I write them like, ‘What would Mariah do?’ She’s actually a brilliant songwriter and writes her own music but if she were ever open to it I would surely…I mean it’s really cool. I’ve written gospel songs. I’ve written country songs. It’s a really, really great space to be in where sonically those songs don’t fit really fit at all on my record but I still love the expression of writing them.”
