Turn Tragedy To Triumph: Parents Use Daughter’s Canceled Wedding To Feed The Homeless
A canceled wedding sounds like a tragedy. You can just imagine tears and wilted flowers. But the parents of this would-be Atlanta bride turned what could have been a really somber occasion into a way to give back.
The parents of the bride, Carol and Willie Fowler, donated their daughter’s canceled reception to the homeless.
The Fowlers decided that there was no need for a a good meal from Villa Christina to go to waste so they invited 200 of Atlanta’s needy to eat.
When the Fowlers called Hosea Feed the Hungry charity and offered the meal, the company initially thought it was a joke.
But the Fowlers were sincere. Though they didn’t explain why the wedding didn’t go down as planned they did say that it was called off 40 days beforehand and they wanted to go ahead and hold the event.
Carol Fowler told WBUR it was her husband’s idea to feed Atlanta’s underprivileged a four course meal.
Mrs. Fowler said she and her husband prayed about it and when they woke up the next morning they decided to call Hosea Feed the Hungry.
Elizabeth Omilami, who heads Hosea Feed the Hungry, said that the children who attended the event will never forget it. There was a clown there and the dinner ended up becoming a learning experience as well.
“The passed hors d’oeuvre were very interesting because the children were wondering, ‘could we take the whole tray, or do we just take one off of the tray? So this was an educational opportunity as well, because now they all know how to eat at a four-course meal and the etiquette involved in that.”
The Fowler’s daughter Tamara even came to the event and Mrs. Fowler said she enjoyed the day.
Mrs. Fowler said, “We’re very pleased that she’s handling it so well. She was delighted to see and know others had an opportunity to enjoy something, rather than allow it to go to waste.”
The family called the meal “The First Annual Fowler Family Celebration of Love” and intend to host a similar event next year, this time paid by sponsors.
We can dig it!
