Ellen Pompeo Asks Where Were The People Of Color At The Emmys: “That Dance Number Was Embarrassing”
Just when you think white people don’t get it — it being the need for diversity on television — Ellen Pompeo speaks out and makes us all proud.
Yesterday the “Grey’s Anatomy” actress spoke with the Associated Press and was asked to give her take on the 2013 Emmy Award ceremony Sunday night, and let’s just say she was not pleased. In fact, she specifically told the news outlet she was “really disappointed” with this year’s show.
“I didn’t see any diversity in the Emmys at all. The Emmys felt so dated to me,” she said in the interview. “That dance number was embarrassing. Did you see one person of color in that dance number?”
That answer would be no.
There’s nothing new about Ellen’s sentiments, of course, other than the messenger. Every year, people of color lament the lack of diversity over nominees, honorees, and performers in virtually every mainstream award show, but it always seems the “other half” doesn’t get it. Undoubtedly, the fact that Ellen is in an interracial relationship makes her much more sensitive to matters of race. The 43-year-old actress married music producer Chris Ivery in 2007 and they welcomed their first child in 2009.
So far, there hasn’t been much response to Ellen’s declaration of disappointment other than news reporting, but let’s just hope her reaction doesn’t fall on deaf ears.
