Last night, a premiere screening of “Baggage Claim” was shown at the UrbanWorld Film Festival in New York City and several stars from the movie came out to engage with fans. As you know, the film stars some of everybody and their mama, including Paula Patton, Jill Scott, Derek Luke, Tia Mowry, Rickey Smiley, Trey Songz, and the always fabulous Jenifer Lewis.

After the screening, a panel discussion was held where audience members could ask the actors anything they wanted and when one moviegoer asked Miss Lewis what advice she had for aspiring actors wanting to break into the business, the veteran said a mouthful after proclaiming, “I’m about to lay you out.” That’s exactly what she did, telling her:

“The elevator to success is broken, take the stairs. You don’t want to get it right away. Why don’t you read on people who are in this business who got it fast? Where they at? I mean that with compassion in my heart. I don’t think I’ve said this on stage before but I’m going to say this tonight: You can have anything you want. Anything! Anything you want you can have – I got it.

“I came from poverty. I used an outhouse until I was in the ninth grade, and to add insult to injury, that outhouse was across the street from the school, so I was teased every day. That’s how poor I was and I was hungry as a kid.

“The point is this, you do your best and you leave the rest. Don’t let life drive you crazy, you drive that mother f***er, it’s yours. You’re in charge; you can wait for something outside of you to help you if you want. You better look in the mirror and love what you see or stand there until you do. Don’t think it’s going to come overnight, it’s not. Your job is to do the work.”

Can we get a witness??

Oprah might want to call on Jenifer Lewis for a “Jenifer: Fix My Life” special with the knowledge this woman was dropping last night. We can’t even do it justice with a write-up, so make sure you check out the video below for all the hilarious innuendo mixed in with this wisdom. What do you think about what she said?
