J. Cole released “Crooked Smile” featuring T-Boz and Chili from TLC in June prior to dropping his Born Sinner album, but our favorite cutie from Roc Nation made us wait all summer for the video. Finally as the weather is cooling down, we can curl up and watch Coles’ visual masterpiece to his hit song.
According to our brother site Hip Hop Wired, prepare to get your Kleenex ready as J. Cole “paints a picture of how two lives intertwine during the course of a day in a treatment dedicated to Aiyana Stanley-Jones.”
During the course of the video we meet two men who share similarities in terms of family life; though professionally, they are at two separate ends of a spectrum. The video ends in tragedy and its aftermath makes you question police brutality and why people choose certain “careers.” The details in the video are impeccable and clearly speak to the recent racially driven events that have occurred in our cities, like the shooting death of 7-year-old Aiyana in Detroit in 2010.
Aiyana Stanley-Jones died after being shot by an officer during a SWAT team drug raid. At the end of the video, J. Cole leaves a profound message with his audience, stating:
“Please reconsider your war on drugs.”
