Fresh Start: Sandy Hook Students Begin New School Year
Today as students from Sandy Hook Elementary start a new school year they’ll notice that armed guards are stationed in the hallways and throughout the building.
Sandy Hook Elementary, the school that fell victim to tragedy when a gunman opened fire killing six educators and 20 first graders in December 2012, has been relocated to the former Chalk Hill Middle School.
School officials say that their priority today is making the students feel comfortable and safe. The new building, which is located in Monroe, Connecticut is also decorated to look like the former Sandy Hook that has been closed since last December.
This past May, a Newtown task force approved a proposal to tear down the old Sandy Hook school and replace it with a new building on the same property.
We’re hoping and praying these students won’t be afraid to come to school anymore and that they’re able to focus on learning and just being kids this school year.
