Yesterday, many of you were shocked at news that Eva Marcille and Kevin McCall are expecting their first child together — before becoming husband and wife. But the truth is, in Hollywood, having babies before marrying has become the norm (and not just for black women). Think we’re exaggerating? Check out these 15 celebs who put the carriage before the marriage.
Salma Hayek took her time becoming a mother and took an even longer time becoming a wife. In 2007, the Frieda star announced she was engaged to billionaire fiancé François Henri Pinault and pregnant with their first child together. At 40 years old, Salma and her boyfriend welcomed Valentina Paloma Pinault into the world but shortly afterward the couple announced their split. Patching things up and ready to give it a go one more time, Hayek and Pinault announced plans to wed again and tied the knot two years later.
Black Swan was a huge movie for Natalie Portman. Not only did the 2010 film help Portman earn her first Oscar, but the Israeli native also met her future husband on the set. French-born choreographer Benjamin Millipied was hired to come up with the dance moves for the movie but ended up putting the moves on the movie’s star. Portman and Millipied soon started dating and before long, the Academy award winner was pregnant. Their son was born in June of 2011 and his parents tied the knot the following year.
T.I. and Tiny
Rapper T.I. had been with his girlfriend Tameka “Tiny” Cottles for almost a decade before making an honest woman out of her. Although he has three children from previous relationships and she had a daughter before hooking up with the Atlanta rapper, T.I. and Tiny welcomed their first child together after three years of dating. Another son was born before T.I. and Tiny said “I do” in a lavish ceremony in 2010. The happy family are now the subject of the popular Vh1 reality show “T.I. & Tiny: A Family Hustle.”
Before settling down with Tom Cruise, actress Katie Holmes had a wholesome, good girl image, so her fans were beside themselves when just two months after breaking up with ex-fiance Chris Klein, Holmes was seen out and about on the arm of Cruise. The couple got engaged in 2005 but a few months before their extravagant Italian wedding in late 2006, they welcomed their first child together. The union would only last a few years. Last year Holmes filed for divorce. They both signed on the dotted line just two weeks later making the quickie divorce final.
When supermodel Heidi Klum started dating singer Seal she was pregnant with ex-boyfriend Flavio Briatore’s baby. Klum’s first child was born with boyfriend Seal present in the delivery room in 2004 and he later adopted baby Helene. The couple wasted no time tying the knot and then increasing the family size. They got married in May of 2005 and son Henry was born in September. Klum and Seal would have two more children together and renew their vows every year until they split up last year.
Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi
Fans of MTV’s “Jersey Shore” tuned in each week to see the crazy antics of the fun-loving, bar-hopping Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi. After four seasons of the show, the tiny star finally found love with beau Jionni Lavalle and the couple welcomed son Lorenzo last year. Needless to say, a team of cameramen were on hand to welcome Lorenzo into the world. Although they have yet to set a date, Polizzi is determined to plan the wedding of her dreams.
While some castmates used Bravo’s hit “Real Housewives of Atlanta” to launch or re-launch their careers, Kim Zolciak used the show to help her complete her family. A single mother of two, Zolciak met football player Kroy Brennan during a charity event while filming a scene for the show. Two years ago, the couple welcomed their first child together before tying the knot. They welcomed another son the following year. Earlier this summer, Zolciak announced she was pregnant with her fifth child but then it was revealed she was actually carrying her fifth and sixth. Both parents are said to be overjoyed with the idea of having twins.
Nicole Richie may have started off on the wrong path hanging out with the wrong crowd but after she matured and ditched party girlfriends Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, Richie got started on her family. The former socialite began dating Good Charlotte’s member Joel Madden. The couple welcomed a child in 2008 and another one in 2009 before they even got engaged. Richie and Madden finally tied the knot in 2010.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
While married to Jennifer Aniston, actor Brad Pitt admitted how much he wanted to be a father. He got his wish once he left Aniston and hooked up with beauty Angelina Jolie. A single mother of an adopted son when they first started dating, the Hollywood power couple are now the proud parents of six children. Even though they have vowed to not tie the knot until gay marriage was legal, Pitt and Jolie became engaged in 2012 after surmounting pressure from their children, but their wedding plans have been put on hold for an important reason. Recently, Jolie revealed she underwent a double mastectomy.
Former party animal Tobey Maguire realized he had a severe problem on his hands and withdrew himself from 1995’s Empire Records to check into treatment. Cleaning up his act, the Spider-Man star found love on the set of his 2003 film Seabiscuit. He met and fell in love with Universal Studio head Ronald Meyer’s daughter, Jennifer. After three years of dating, they welcomed their first child. The couple got hitched in Hawaii the following year. Adding one more child to the mix, Maguire and his wife had another baby in 2009.
David and Victoria Beckham
International soccer star David Beckham has unofficially been off the market since he started dating former Spice Girl member Victoria aka Posh Spice in 1997. Getting engaged in 1998, the British-born couple got married on July 4th the following year and had one very precious guest in attendance. Their son Brooklyn was born a few months prior to the nuptials. After having three boys, the Beckhams finally welcomed a daughter in 2011.

Danny Devito played Hollywood matchmaker by introducing Michael Douglas to Catherine Zeta-Jones in 1998, but the Perfect Murder star wasn’t quite divorced yet. After a courtship, Douglas popped the question and they started planning a lavish wedding at New York’s Plaza Hotel but before they said “I do,” they welcomed son Dylan Michael Douglas. They tied the knot several months later, just two weeks after Douglas’ divorce was finalized.
