Paula Deen Settles Harassment Case, Plaintiff Issues Shocking Statement

August 25, 2013  |

Paula Deen’s long legal nightmare may now be over. News this weekend is that the fallen celebrity chef has reached a settlement with Lisa Jackson, the woman whose lawsuit alleging racial discrimination and sexual harassment led to Deen’s downfall. But in the wake of the settlement, Jackson has issued a statement that actually praises Deen and her family.

In a statement quoted in The Los Angeles Times, Jackson said:

“During a very difficult period in my life the Deen family gave me hope and the opportunity to work to build a brighter future for my family and me.

“I assumed that all of my complaints about the workplace environment were getting to Paula Deen, but I learned during this matter that this was not the case. The Paula Deen I have known for more than 8 years, is a woman of compassion and kindness and will never tolerate discrimination or racism of any kind toward anyone.

“I now know that the workplace environment issues that I raised are being reviewed and will in the future no longer be at issue.”

Jackson hasn’t commented any further, and a court document says the case was settled ‘”without any award of costs or fees to any party.” Hmm… Given the extreme turnaround of this statement, it’s hard to believe that no money changed hands. At this point, Deen probably just wanted to pay to make the problem go away. And Jackson was probably willing to accept rather than go through the weeks of legal procedure.

In a statement from Paula Deen, which includes compliments for Jackson and her years of service, Deen says, “Moving forward my team and I are working to review the workplace environment issues that were raised in this matter and to retool all of my businesses operations. I look forward to getting back to doing what I love.”

The portion of the lawsuit alleging racial discrimination had been dismissed earlier. This settlement is related to the remaining charges.
