Who would have thought that some palatable chemistry in “Bonnie & Clyde” would have evolved into one of the most beautiful, long-standing and admirable relationships in all of hip-hop? But more than 10 years later, Beyonce Knowles and Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter have silenced naysayers, becoming one of Hollywood’s most recognizable couples and the crowning Mr. and Mrs. of Hip Hop. But more than just standing at the top of the music game, Bey and Jay have also given legions of fans hope that Hollywood love connections can indeed last. So in honor of our favorite power couple, let’s take a look back through Bey and Hova’s relationship. Oh, and Happy Birthday Beyonce!

Beyonce and Jay-Z: Where It All Began

She was an up-and-coming star who had parlayed her days as part of Destiny’s Child into solo stardom. He was a hip hop heavyweight, whose unique voice and distinctive lyrics took him right to the top of the rap game. They certainly didn’t seem like a perfect pair on the surface, but the minute fans got a chance to witness their chemistry in the video for “Bonnie & Clyde,” the rumor mill was certainly a churnin’. Not only did their vocals perfectly sync up with one another, but they seemed to genuinely love sharing the screen together. But as to be expected, they kept any romantic feelings toward each other safely out of the public eye.

Back For More

With the success of “Bonnie & Clyde,” it didn’t come as much of a shock that Bey and Jay would collaborate again, this time on “Crazy in Love.” The song would become a wildly popular hit for Beyonce as she continued to find success on the solo front. Hindsight is 20/20 and considering those two would duet on a song called “Crazy in Love,” it should have been crystal clear that there was some action going on outside of the recording studio, but, as usual, the couple played off any rumblings of being more than just friends. But keeping their business on the low wouldn’t last for very much longer.

Too Much To Hide

While the couple tried desperately to keep their personal business under wraps, it wasn’t before long that Beyonce and Jay-Z would start making a number of public and red-carpet appearances. From the MTV video music awards to the Grammys to even the Oscars, Beyonce and Jay-Z dazzled on entertainment’s biggest stages. And their joint style continued to attract all the right attention, making them one of Hollywood’s most sought-after and interesting lovers.

Making Beautiful Music

And the on-stage collaborations continued to chug along for Bey and Jay way past the days of “Bonnie & Clyde” and “Crazy in Love.” The couple would once again join forces as Beyonce released her second solo album “B-Day.” Enjoying her blissful relationship with Hova out in the open, Beyonce kicked off “B-day” with the single “Déjà Vu,” her third collaboration with Jay-Z. As her star continued to rise, the inevitable, when-will-they-get-married questions started rearing their head. But, true to form, the couple was markedly silent about their plans for little ballers (or ballettes).

Jay-Z was largely an established star when he began his romance with Beyonce, but her star was just rising. By 2006, however, the lovely Beyonce Knowles had proven herself to be one of the most versatile and popular mainstream artists of her generation. And as if conquering the music industry wasn’t enough, Beyonce turned her attention to making her presence known on the silver screen. The Pink Panther gets a handwave from us, but Dreamgirls was a stunning tour de force that proved Beyonce was no one-trick pony.

Here Comes The Bride

Unlike many of her equally famous peers, Beyonce and Jay-Z weren’t about to open up their special day to prying eyes. They weren’t interested in photo spreads or detailed interviews ahead of or immediately following their April 4, 2008 nuptials in New York. Attended by family and select friends, Beyonce and Jay-Z’s wedding will go down as one of the most carefully guarded celebrity weddings in recent memory. It would be several years before Beyonce would give Essence magazine some insight into her special day, including the tid-bit that the couple had gotten matching tattoos on their ring fingers (along with a traditional wedding band) to commemorate the day.

Wedding Day Bling

One $5 million, 18-carat flawless diamond ring was certainly not something that was going to escape the attention of reporters and fans alike when Beyonce was seen sporting her new trinket in September 2008, months after her secret wedding to Jay-Z. Though the couple certainly wanted to keep their wedding as seemingly low-key as possible, Beyonce’s incredible ring was not to be missed.

A Little Hip-Hop in Washington

Mr. and Mrs. Carter stepped into new territory when they started rubbing elbows with another power couple: Barack and Michelle Obama. From the campaign trail to the Inaugural Ball, Jay and Bey and Barack and Michelle become one of the most unexpected, yet refreshing sights we have seen in American politics (and popular culture) in a very long time. And even more refreshing: Their friendship wasn’t one forged out of convenience or mututal benefit. It was largely rooted in both couples’ commitment to social justice and community improvement.

Special Shoutout

The notoriously private Beyonce shocked fans when she threw caution to the wind and decided to give her hubby some on-stage recognition at the 52nd annual Grammy Awards. During her acceptance speech for Female Pop Vocal of the Year, Beyonce said “I’d love to thank my family for all their love and support including my husband.” While the declaration certainly came as a surprise, no one could blame Bey for being quite happy. The songstress took home six trophies that night, a record for a female performer.

Show Them The Money

Once again, Beyonce and her hip-hop hubby were named to Forbes Highest Paid Couples list in 2011. Earning an estimated $72 million between May 2010 and May 2011, Beyonce and Jay-Z outpaced couples such as Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen, as well as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. But the best part of this: Beyonce and Jay have never seemed to lose sight of themselves, despite making that paper. Good work, guys.

Bun In The Oven

Ever since their super-secret wedding celebration, the when-are-they-having-a-baby rumblings plagued this happy couple. Though rumors began to really pick up steam in 2011, it wasn’t until Queen Bey took to the VMAs red carpet that the world got the confirmation they were looking for. And it wasn’t before long that Beyonce took to the stage to share the news with the world during her performance of “Love on Top.” At the conclusion of the number, she popped open her sequined Dolce and Gabbana blazer to reveal her tiny baby bump as proud papa Jay-Z looked on.

Doing The Mama-To-Be Thang

Not surprisingly, Beyonce rocked maternity wear like no other. She wasn’t afraid to still show off her signature curves, even though she was expecting. With husband Jay-Z by her side, the pop diva glowed on every red carpet, every awards show and every outing she was photographed during.

Welcome To The World … Blue Ivy

Sure there was some initial head-scratching over the name choice, but there was no denying the excitement fans felt when news of the birth of Beyonce and Jay-Z’s daughter Blue Ivy Carter hit the interwebs. The seven pound bundle of hip hop awesome was born on January 7, 2012 in New York City.

Future Ballers

Well, maybe Beyonce, Jay-Z and their little one are already holding it down in terms of their baller status, but we know there are bright futures to come from all three of them. With Beyonce’s career hotter than its ever been, with Jay-Z never turning away from a lucrative business opportunity and with Blue Ivy dazzling with her adorable looks, there’s only one way to go for the Carters: Up.
