Dedicated Or Dumb? Women Who’ve Stood By Their Men During Scandals
It takes a strong woman to stand by her man while he is facing allegations of cheating and other scandals. It takes an even stronger woman to stick by her man in the limelight. These women chose to put on a brave face and publicly support their spouses, despite the corruption they confessed to being involved in.
In 2011, NYC Congressman Anthony Weiner had to resign in shame after a sexting scandal overshadowed his political career. Following in the lead of her former boss Hillary Clinton, Weiner’s wife Huma Abedin, who was pregnant at the time, decided to stay with her husband of one year. In the wake of a second round of scandal during his mayoral campaign, Abedin spoke publicly for the first time and said she is determined to stand by Weiner for the sake of her family. Penning an essay in the latest issue of Haaper’s Bazaar she wrote, “I had to make that same decision for myself, for my son, for our family. And I know in my heart that I made the right one.”
As part of the media hungry Kardashian clan, Khloe Kardashian-Odom is used to living with the cameras in her face. But recently, the reality television show star and her basketball player husband Lamar Odom have received unwanted attention. A woman has come forward alleging she had an affair with the Los Angeles Clipper star. Odom has denied the affair, calling her an “NBA groupie.” His wife Khloe is staying by his side, at least in front of Instagram cameras, for now.
Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie married longtime beau, actor Josh Duhamel, in 2009 but the honeymoon phase didn’t last long. That same year the “Las Vegas” star had an affair with an Atlanta stripper. Forgiving her newlywed husband, Fergie, real name Stacy Ann Ferguson, and Duhamel renewed their vows on their first wedding anniversary. The happy couple is expecting their first child in the fall.
Taking a cue from Tammi Wynette’s “Stand By Your Man,” former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton did just that after her husband and former president Bill Clinton admitted to engaging in inappropriate behavior with a White House intern. While the rest of the country was appalled with his behavior, Clinton stood stoically silent. Many called Clinton’s decision to stay married to Clinton calculating. She was elected to represent New York in the senate in 2000, and after a failed presidential campaign, Clinton became the most traveled Secretary of State with more than one million miles clocked crossing the globe.
Snoop Dogg (or Lion, depending on the song) married his high school sweetheart Shante Taylor in 1997. Having a rap personae as a pimp can cause trouble in any marriage, especially when the husband cheats. Snoop’s wife Shante filed for a divorce back in 2004, but the couple was able to work past the “Drop It Like It’s Hot” rapper’s roaming ways. “I cheated on her,” said Snoop, real name Calvin Broadus. “That’s the worst thing you could possibly do – lose somebody’s trust who really loves you.”
Basketball player Kobe Bryant entered the league to great fanfare in 1996. After becoming a star player with the Los Angeles Lakers, Bryant was sitting at the top of the world until 2003 when a 19-year-old Colorado hotel worker accused the then 24-year-old of rape. Bryant alleged the encounter was consensual. By his side through the trial, and as endorsement deals dried up, was his wife Vanessa. Although they have had problems in the past and she filed for divorce in 2011, Bryant and his wife remain a couple, in part for the sake of their two daughters it seems.
Silda Wall Spitzer
Eliot Spitzer’s political career went on an abrupt hiatus in 2008. He resigned from his post as governor of New York after his dalliances with prostitutes came to light. By his side through the scandal was his wife of 21 years, Silda. After spending some time to repair his marriage, Spitzer slowly worked his way back into the public eye. He recently threw his hat in the ring to run for comptroller of New York City. Noticeably absent from his side during this run is Silda.
Wyclef Jean was one-third of one of the most prolific hip-hop groups of all time but soon after their chart-topping sophomore album “The Score,” The Fugees split up. Confirming what most people already assumed, last year Wyclef admitted to having an affair with fellow band mate Lauryn Hill, which ultimately led to the break up of the group. Wyclef was also married at the time. Wife Marie Claudinette stayed with the famous guitarist/producer throughout the affair. The couple adopted a daughter in 2004.
Victoria Beckham rose to stardom as one-fifth of the British girl group Spice Girls. She became even more famous after marrying soccer phenom David Beckham. The couple got married back in 1999, but in 2004 they experienced hardship when David’s former personal assistant came forward with allegations of an affair. Although he denied the claim, Rebecca Loos cashed in on her 15 minutes of fame by appearing on numerous talk shows and reality television series. Victoria admitted in an interview with V magazine “it was a really tough time,” but the family had emerged from the experience “stronger and happier.”
John Edwards dreamed of being president of the United States and campaigned for the highest office in the land twice. There to support him through both campaigns was wife Elizabeth, even as she battled breast cancer. She also stood by her husband when word of his affair leaked but even she had her limits. After a year of denying he fathered a child with a woman hired to work on his 2008 campaign, the former senator from South Carolina came clean and admitted paternity. Even though she was dying of cancer, Elizabeth filed for divorce. She passed away in December 2010 at the age of 61.
Gwen Stefani understands better than most people that everyone has a past. Her husband’s past popped up in their marriage several times. In 2004, just two years into the union, a paternity test proved husband Gavin Rossdale was the father of a 15-year-old daughter. The No Doubt singer was devastated by the news but decided to stay with her husband. In 2010, Rossdale finally came clean about a fling he had years ago with cross-dressing 80’s pop star Marilyn.
On his quest from “the Terminator” to the governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger was called a womanizer on the campaign. His wife, Maria Shriver, vouched for her husband and assured voters the former Austrian bodybuilder was no cad. But a few months after leaving office, their marriage would suffer the biggest blow yet: Schwarzenegger fathered a child with the maid, Mildred, during their 25-year marriage. Although the couple officially separated, they have reportedly attended marital counseling. Schwarzenegger has publicly admitted he would like to reunite with Shriver.
Chris Rock’s marriage to Malaak Compton was put in jeopardy two years into the union when a woman the comedian had an affair with tried to extort him. The I Think I Love My Wife hooked up with Hungarian model Monica Zsibrita in 1998. She then turned around and said she was pregnant. When that didn’t work, she claimed the funnyman raped her. Rock hired a private investigator to prove his innocence. He repaired his marriage to his wife. The happy couple has two daughters.
Kathie Lee Gifford
Former NFL great Frank Gifford was happily married to his second wife Kathie Lee for 12 years when he made the cover of The Globe tabloid magazine. And not for a good reason. In 1997, Gifford was caught on videotape being seduced by a flight attendant at a hotel room in New York City. At first Gifford denied the affair until the video surfaced. Kathie Lee, who was the co-host of “Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee” at the time, vowed to stay with her cheating husband.
Gordon Ramsay is known for his brash behavior and potty mouth but he was uncharacteristically quiet in 2008 after Sarah Symonds claimed the two were involved in a seven-year extramarital affair. Putting on a brave face and showing her support, his wife Tana stepped out with the “Hell’s Kitchen” chef hand in hand immediately following the accusations. Ramsay reportedly came clean about the affair and apologized to his wife. Symonds, a self-proclaimed professional mistress, claims there’s a sex tape with her and Gordon floating around somewhere.
