That Baby’s (Kind Of) Back On Top: Ciara’s New Album Debuts At Number Two On The Billboard Charts
The last time Ciara had very much success on the Billboard charts, the year was 2009, and she had just put out her album Fantasy Ride. The song that helped propel that album to the top three on the Billboard 200 album charts was “Love Sex Magic,” which was a collaboration with Justin Timberlake that wound up being a worldwide hit. After that, by 2010 she was releasing the album Basic Instinct, and the results weren’t what anybody was expecting. The album failed to get anywhere close to the Top 10 and peaked at 44. Blame it on the fact that the video for her lead single, “Ride,” was banned by BET for its suggestive dancing, and because she claimed her label at the time, LaFace/Jive, didn’t promote her single “Gimmie Dat” or the album well. Ciara said she was forced to pay out of her own pocket to get the word out. You’d think that would get a girl down…
But fast forward to 2013, and it looks like Ciara will finally be able to crack into the Top 10 for the first time since 2009, as Billboard reports that her album, Ciara, has debuted at number two on the charts, just finishing behind Jay-Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail release. Ciara’s album sold 58,000 copies, which when compared to Jay-Z’s sales of 527,000 seems low. But when compared to her last album’s sales of just 37,000 during its first week, it’s definitely an improvement. As for Jigga Man, Magna Carta Holy Grail marks the rapper’s 13th number one album and it is the second highest selling album of the year behind Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience. And can we give a big kudos to J.Cole and his album Born Sinner? It’s managed to stay in the top three for another week, after peaking at number one last week. That baby is doing big things!
All in all, I’m glad to see Ciara’s new album debut well. She has really promoted this thing well with all her live performances and all the videos/teasers she’s released. I do think that releasing the album soon after she dropped the single “Body Party” (which was in April) with all of its buzz and success would have been a better idea than waiting until mid-summer to do it, but either way, it’s clear that her hard work has paid off. Congrats!
