Sisters Unite For The ZMJ Denim Line For Curvy Girls
MN: As fashion designers and as African-American women yourself, what tips do you suggest for a woman looking for the perfect fit in denim?
ZJ: ZMJ Denim relies heavily on feedback. We like to hear from our customers! Whatever your issues are with denim, we want to be the solution and come back to you with a great pair of jeans. If you’re having issues with the denim you wear, you need to get on YouTube, Twitter and other social media outlets and let these designers know.
TWJ: A good way to find a great fit is to go to the stores, buy a bunch of different pairs of jeans and go home to take the time to look in the mirror. Try the jeans on, turn around, take that time with yourself to really see what works. Hopefully, you’ll find a fit and brand that works.
MN: What business tips do you give another woman looking to fill a niche in an industry, like fashion?
ZJ: Market research works, because if you don’t know your market, it hinders what you can do and your growth as a brand. You have to know where you’re going in order to get there. In anything that you do, whether it be fashion or any business, you have to know your market. You have to know what’s out there, what’s popular, what people like… just doing your research on the market helps. Making sure you have an idea of your start-up costs is also important.
TWJ: Regardless of where you are or are starting from, don’t let fear get in the way of pursuing your goals and dreams. Not having the money to start is not a good enough reason. You have to get creative. Especially in fashion. You will have to make sacrifices in starting any business venture, so know what your sacrifices are. Be consistent, stay positive and be careful of the advice you receive because it is your journey and not someone else’s. You have to know what you are doing is your vision.
