Sisters Unite For The ZMJ Denim Line For Curvy Girls
MN: How long has ZMJ Denim been around?
ZJ: We initially began our research and the formatting of our business in 2007. We didn’t really fully launch until 2009. We wanted to take time to perfect our fit on different body shapes.
MN: What sizes do your jeans typically cater to?
ZJ: Our current size range is a size 14 to 24. We will possibly expand up to a size 32.
TJW: With the success of our new venture with Alex Martin-Dean (daughter of Oscar winner, Whoopi Goldberg), that collection will go down to a size 10. It’s just about testing the market and seeing how it all works.
MN: You would be surprised with all of the denim lines that have been out, from celebrities and otherwise, the struggle to find the best-fitting denim is still real. Speaking of which, why did you decide to go into denim?
ZJ: I’m a denim girl. I love jeans, I love my denim to be comfortable. When we came to it, I was like, “Let’s start with denim.” At the time, there was only Apple Bottoms, Baby Phat and Rocawear [in the urban denim industry], and they were all so gaudy and overpowered with their logos. To me, denim is a staple piece now, and [there are] options like a pair of jeans with all the bells and whistles, or a plain denim, with different cuts and different styles. My sister and I agreed that if we come out with the line, we would offer both. I would cater to more of the junior market, whereas my sister would cater more toward the contemporary market.
MN: On the ZMJ Denim website, you offer that variety, from capris to skinny legs to the super-skinny legged jeans. What types of trends and styles do you see reign popular with your consumers?
ZJ: Definitely the printed and floral denims and also the lime and tangerine skinny jeans. The vibrant colors and the printed denim is in the highest demand. In the fall, we have a camouflage denim print coming out, [in] a plum and beige-cream and gray.
