When I first heard about Being Mary Jane, which used to be Single Black Female, I wasn’t all that excited about it (“A show about a successful black woman who can’t get a man? No thanks.”). But after watching the full trailer for the show, I’m impressed. From what I can see in the two-minute clip, Gabrielle Union’s character has a lot more than dating woes to worry about as she tackles the negative images sent out about black women in the media as a successful talk show host while also trying to keep her scandalous family together. Here’s the premise if you weren’t aware:
“Mary Jane Paul has it all: she’s a successful TV news anchor, entirely self-sufficient – an all-around powerhouse who remains devoted to a family that doesn’t share her motivation. As Mary Jane juggles her life, her work and her commitment to her family, we find out how far she’s willing to go to find the puzzle pieces that she, and society, insist are missing from her life as a single Black female.”
The series is brought to you by the exceptionally talented Mara Brock Akil (Girlfriends, The Game, Jumping The Broom) and if you’re feeling the trailer, the show in itself can be seen starting July 2 on BET. Some of our staff members went to a screening for the show this past weekend and LOVED it, so that’s a good sign. I’m happy to say that I’m excited for it!
