Keeping your social media profiles at least somewhat professional can not only be advantageous to you, but your career endeavors. You just never know who is watching or what opportunities lay ahead. Here are some ways to spruce up your social media profiles in hopes of scoring a new job.

List your creds

Your social media profiles are your opportunities to show the world (and a few recruiters) your talents and expertise. List your education, certifications, previous employers and current place of business in the designated areas. This will help people get an idea of where you have been, and where you are going. Just remember to keep it short and sweet as this is not a resume.

Show what you got

If you are a business owner or freelancer looking for your next gig, use your social media profiles to show off your portfolio of work. Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter for example are great outlets to highlight a recent project to the masses. You can not only get feedback but hopefully have it forwarded to others who may be interested in your services.

Google yourself

Ignorance is unfortunately not bliss when it comes to certain things. Take some time out of your schedule to Google yourself and see what comes up. This will give you some insight on how you look to future employers when they do the same thing. Should certain personal things pop up on your social media profiles (or elsewhere), do your best to clean up the matter – and fast.

Clean up LinkedIn

There’s no getting around the fact that millions of companies utilize LinkedIn. Because of this, you definitely need to spruce up your LinkedIn profile as it is often a major gateway between you and a future job opportunity. Think about your message

Even if you are reposting or retweeting something, it reflects you. Think about each of your social media updates as a piece to your personal brand. Sure some funny things here and there can show your personality (just make sure they aren’t offensive) but speak with a purpose. Does this mean that all of your posts have to be related to your field? No, but a few doesn’t hurt as it shows you have an expert take on things.


There’s nothing wrong with reaching out to someone in your social media sphere who works at a company you like, or is in a position you hope to achieve. If you think about it, people pay money to attend various networking mixers and events. Why shell out a dime when you have instant online access? If you don’t put yourself out there, you’ll never know what can happen.

Join groups

Depending on the type of social media, you may have an opportunity to join an industry-related group. This is a great chance to not only network among your peers, but also join in on tips and conversations on things related to your career. Don’t be afraid to leave your two cents.

Clean up your image… literally

Even if your social media profile is private, there is a good chance people will be able to see your profile picture, which means you should keep the pic somewhat professional. Duck face photos, selfies in the bathroom and snaps with alcohol can instantly turn away recruiters, let alone people you plan to network in the future.

Use privacy settings

As social media was meant to keep things social, it’s okay if you want to let your hair down from time to time – sharing photos and randoms with friends and family. Just keep in mind that if you don’t use privacy settings, you run the risk of letting too much of your business out. Be sure not to disclose tons of personal information to people who are not on your acquaintances list (make sure you pay attention). Just remember that things like Twitter don’t have a filter so be sure to clean up your image by not going Amanda Bynes on your social media profiles.
