Box Office Bomb? Will Smith’s “After Earth” Could Be A Weekend Afterthought
He is the KING of the summer blockbusters without a doubt. But it looks like Will Smith’s new film will be a harder sell for 2013.
After promoting After Earth just about all over the world, Will and Jaden Smith were probably pretty certain that the movie would blow up just as well as the elder Smith’s other summer movies.
Not so fast.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the damage wasn’t too bad on Friday as it is still in second place behind Now You See Me, raking in $9.8 million. By the end of the weekend, experts expect it to take in close to $27 million. While that is a perfectly acceptable weekend opening, Will Smith summer (or close to it) movies typically open with over $40 million in revenue.
In many ways, these dollars reflect the horrible reviews the movie has gotten. Many critics say that it resembles more of a story about Scientology than a science fiction film. Will has been rumored to be involved in Scientology in some way so this might not be far-fetched.
It should also be pointed out that although the plot was Smith’s idea, it was directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Shyamalan is well known for his hit-or-miss films and it looks like this one might fall on the “miss” list.
We’ll see what Monday morning holds but even if it doesn’t work out, Smith’s production company, Overbrook Films, is always working on the next best thing.
Have you seen or are you planning on seeing After Earth?
