Tyler Perry Addresses Naysayers: ‘I Look For The Truth In The Critique’ Then Disregard The Rest
Tyler Perry is arguably one of the most harshly criticized producers in Hollywood. There really seems to be no middle ground with most people when it comes to 43-year-old mogul and his work. Most either love his films or hate them. Rarely does Tyler ever publicly address his critics and considering the high volume of people who either slam or praise him on a daily basis, it’s difficult to imagine that he even pays attention to what people are saying about him anymore. During a recent interview with Huff Post Live, the Madea visionary revealed that he actually does take what’s being said about him into consideration and expressed that he sort of takes an eat-the-meat-spit-out-the-bones approach when it comes to public opinion.
“Here’s the thing about the critics: I look for the truth in the critique, I honestly do. If there’s something in there that makes sense to me, I try to find it and kind of say, ‘I thought that.’ But, if it’s vitriolic and it’s just venomous, I don’t pay attention to it,” Perry said.
He also expressed that although he recieves an overwhelming volume of negative feedback, the good frequently outweighs the bad.
“It’s very difficult because I have to hear the balance. You have someone who says, ‘This is awful. This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.’ And then I’ve gotta mother sending me a letter saying [and these are thousands of letters on my Facebook page], ‘I was in an abusive and I was able to get out after watching Diary of a Mad Black Woman.’ One woman talked about having a cornea transplant and the first movie she wanted to see was mine. These are real stories that touch my heart in such a way that I’m thinking, ‘Why even pay attention to that, when it’s people who are moved and continue to come and see the films.'”
