Style To Steal Or Girl, Stop: Our Favorite Black And Brown Faces Go Punk For 2013 Met Gala (Who Killed It And Who Bombed?)
Around the same time every year in spring, some of the world’s biggest celebrities get all dolled up in their best couture to show up and show out at the The Costume Institute Gala, other wise known as the Met Gala. And that’s exactly what happened last night. The theme this year was the influence of punk to bring attention to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s spring exhibition, “PUNK: Chaos to Couture.” While some black and brown celebrities were able to bring it in a punk-rock way, others just did their best not to look a fool (some to no avail). Let’s take a look at the ensembles from last night’s event and figure out who was fabulous and who failed on the red carpet.
Naomie Harris in Donna Karan Altelier
Steal. Gorgeous colors, nice dress. Is it punk though? Not so much.
Kerry Washington in Vera Wang
Stop. Absolutely love Kerry Washington, but this dress was a bit much for us. Either ditch the peplum detailing, or the gloves, but there’s a whole lot going on that we’re not really a fan of.
Jennifer Lopez in Michael Kors
Steal. The hair…YAAAAAAS! The dress? Very cute, but I don’t really see the punk angle outside of the hair. She looks fabulous either way though.
Nicki Minaj in Tommy Hilfiger
Stop. You know, the hair is fly to us, but it is somewhat drowning her out. And while the Hilfiger gown is nice, it’s the wrong place and time for such a look.
Joan Smalls And Tom Ford in Tom Ford
Steal. Is it just us, or does anyone else notice that Tom Ford brings a black model to these events every year? But this particular one, Joan Smalls, slayed in this embroidered see-through gown. What’s punk? The razor-blade earrings.
Alicia Keys in Jason Wu
Stop. I don’t know what it is about this look, but I’m not in love with it. I see that the red streaks in her hair are supposed to make things punk, and so might the leather halter top, but I’m not blown away. Don’t dislike it, but I’ll pass on it.
Beyoncé in Givenchy
Reluctant Stop. Hmmm…Love the idea, but this is too much fire fire flame. Keep the skirt, but I would have loved if she toned it down with stilettos or strappy heels. On the other side of the spectrum, she could have ditched the gloves, and kept the boots. And the grommet belt could have exited stage left as well, but I appreciate the effort!
LaLa Anthony in Zac Posen
Stop. As my co-worker would say, she looks cute, but more prom 2004 than Met Gala 2013. Not a fan of the off-the-shoulder thin sleeves.
Kanye West and Kim Kardashian in Givenchy
STOP. Of all the things a pregnant fashionista could have worn, why oh why would she pick nothing but floral? And the biggest, boldest, grandmother-ish floral print out there? And to add the gloves??? Kanye is dead wrong for allowing her to walk out the house looking like this when she could have tried something different.
Nicole Richie in Topshop
Steal. Love the dress! The detailing is amazing and the white hair for the punk edge actually impressed me too. This silhouette works best for her petite figure.
Solange in Kenzo
VERY Reluctant Stop. While I like this look on Solange, I would like it better for a more laid back event. The gown is a little too casual, and the earrings would be best with another ensemble. But I applaud her for always thinking outside the box. Don’t curse me out, ya’ll!
Rita Ora in Thakoon
Steal. She looks good! But Rita Ora definitely needs to pay attention to how her dresses and skirts fit. The bottom was dragging on the floor a bit and didn’t look like it fitted the way she probably hoped it would. But otherwise, she pulled off this version of a punk-rock look.
Victor Cruz (in Calvin Klein) and Elaina Watley in Lanvin
Reluctant Steal. Well, we can see that Victor looks delicious! As for his main lady, she tried something different, and we don’t hate it. However, we would have loved a different hairstyle. Maybe something more edgy or even romantic.
Amare (Calvin Klein) and Alexis Stoudemire in Giambattista Valli
Steal. The very pregnant Alexis is glowing! I think she looks great in her dress (take notes Kim), which has a lot of feather detailing obviously, but the feathery eyelashes she tried could have gone with Amare’s shoes.
Eve in Dominique Auxilly
Stop. Not really a fan of the gown, or the hair, or the pink lipstick. The cuff is fancy, but we’ve seen E-V-E look a whole lot better on multiple occasions.
