Back in March, Ashanti released the single “Never Should Have,” a truly emotional jam centering on falling in love with a man, watching them make a mistake, breaking up and then wishing you had never fallen for them in the first place. I know what you’re thinking: Nelly. But alas, she didn’t name any names.
One of the saddest moments comes during the bridge when she really breaks down her pain:
You were all that I wanted/I fell in love with you cause you loved me and I thought that you were ready/I thought that we were gonna be a family/And if you weren’t then you should’ve let me/Keep all of my love to give, to someone worthy
And in the video, you see her get emotional, even shedding tears (and good makeup) as the camera flashes over couples breaking up and battling emotions after the fact. Literally, folks are getting tattoos removed, dealing with unplanned pregnancy and walking out on their lovers. It’s heavy.
All in all, the song is actually a very beautiful one. Sad, yes, but well-produced and thought-provoking. The video has its moments where it comes off looking a little cheap, but for the most part, it’s fitting for the song and moving. The track is to appear on her upcoming album, Braveheart, to be released on June 11. As for the video, it was directed by Sanji Senaka. Check out the video and let us know what you think below!
And on a sidenote, am I the only one who thinks they hear the sound of somebody crying around the 3:00 minute mark???
