The Next Mayor Of New York City? Jimmy McMillan Still Thinks The Rent Is Too Damn High
How many times has a New Yorker walked out of their tiny studio apartment on the first of the month, check in hand for the landlord, and thought, “The rent is too damn high!” Many many. One candidate for New York City mayor understands this. That man’s name is Jimmy McMillan. His entire platform is that the rent is too damn high. The party he’s running for is The Rent Is Too Damn High Party. Clear, concise, to the point.
For those living in the Big Apple, McMillan’s is a familiar face. He previously ran for governor. And while he may sympathize with people paying $2,000 or $3,000 per month for their apartment, he actually nearly lost his apartment a couple of months ago because his rent was too damn low. In 2011, he was paying $872.96 for place in Manhattan’s East Village, which is unheard of. But he moved in in the 1970s, so his rent-stabilized place never caught up with the market.
Anyway, McMillan is back! And he’s got a campaign video, made in conjunction with a local website Animal New York, that hits home with his signature message, and a subtext that his “moustache and hair cut are too damn fly.” (Note: City Council Speaker Christine Quinn is the clear frontrunner in the race.)
