Nicki Minaj Says So Far She’s Been A “Spectacular” Judge on “Idol” And Talks Being The “Honest” One On The Panel

March 29, 2013  |

Just a few months ago, people were either loving or absolutely loathing the news that Nicki Minaj would be a judge on American Idol alongside Mariah Carey, Randy Jackson and Keith Urban. The pressure was on her big time, and things only got worse when it was made public that the rapper and Carey had been going at it behind-the-scenes. But as the new season has started, Nicki Minaj is very pleased with her performance as a judge, despite not knowing what to expect and not being a singer.

According to Miss Jia, in a press conference call, when asked what her worst Idol moment had been so far, she said had not a one. She had a pat-myself-on-the-back moment when speaking on her work:

“My best and worst Idol moments? I don’t have a worst Idol moment. I’ve been spectacular. Yes, I am going to toot my own horn. And then my best moment is every single moment. I’ll toot it again!

But she also went in depth during that conversation about her initial worry over whether or not being a judge was the right choice for her because she felt like everyone else was trying to be too nice to those auditioning and she was coming off as the mean judge, which she felt would make folks dislike her:

“I didn’t know what to expect going in to the show. I was so nervous. I had a lot of anxiety. I felt like, ‘Okay, I know everybody’s just going to hate me. There were moments in the audition process that I would say to the producers, ‘I can’t do this anymore. If everyone is going to give a good critique and I’m going to be the only one being honest, then America is going to hate me. I’m going to be seen as mean.’ And the producers said, ‘Nicki, trust us, America is going to appreciate the honesty.’ And that’s all I had to go on.”

As someone who has tuned in occasionally to the show this season, throughout the auditions and the current live shows, I would say she’s really not that bad. No, for real.
While Minaj has her moments of making frivolous comments before actually stating her opinion, I do feel like she tries to say what she knows folks are thinking but the other judges don’t want to say (i.e., “What in the world was THAT!?”). Sometimes that can come out a little harsh, but I wouldn’t say she’s the new Simon Cowell. I think she’s bringing the flavor that American Idol wanted, but let’s be real, it’s just a little too late for that show.
So what do you think of her work as a judge so far?
