And The Gunfire In Chicago Continues: 6-Month-Old Dies After Being Caught With Her Father In Shooting As He Changed Her Diaper
Last night on the South Side of Chicago in the Woodlawn neighborhood, a 6-month-old baby at home with her father sadly became another victim of gun violence in the city. According to The Chicago Tribune, the child, Jonylah Watkins, along with her father, was shot (the father several times, though some reports say she was hit multiple times too) during a drive by while outside of their place of residence on Monday afternoon. The little girl was taken into emergency surgery for hours, but succumbed to her injuries this morning after one bullet wound was too much for her still developing system to deal with, passing through her shoulder and landing in her leg.
Her father, Jonathan Watkins, 29, sustained gunshot wounds to his hip, his butt, and had a bullet graze his face when the shooting occurred. The suspect came to the home and proceeded to open fire on Watkins while he was standing outside, changing his daughter’s diaper as she sat in his minivan (why he was doing that outside is unclear). According to the Tribune, police are currently investigating in order to figure out the motive for the attack (though gang affiliation was speculated in other reports), but Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy says it could be hard to figure out who committed such a crime since witnesses aren’t offering up any information of any sort: “We don’t have one individual who’s stepping up to help us.” That’s clearly not a good start for their investigation and to getting this family justice, but hopefully Jonathan Watkins witnessed something and can speak up for the sake of his young daughter.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Watkins and his family are familiar with this type of gun violence, as the 20-year-old mother of Jonylah was shot in the leg while eight months pregnant with their daughter. However, we all know that this isn’t something a child should have to be brought into the world (and then taken out so sadly) to deal with, and the shooting has left those that love her in a state of complete despair and confusion. As her grandmother, Maryann Young said to the NBC affiliate in Chicago, “She isn’t nothing but 6 months old. How could anybody — what kind of heart?”
As of now, there still aren’t any suspects in custody. Our prayers go out to Watkins’ family and all those who continue to deal with the effects of gun and gang violence in Chicago. It’s beyond being out of hand and at this point, we could use a miracle to stop it all.
