It’s A Law & Order Reunion! S. Epatha Merkerson Lands Role In Marvin Gaye Biopic
Despite objections to the upcoming Marvin Gaye biopic, “Sexual Healing,” it appears the show must — or at least will — go on. After Lenny Kravitz dropped out of the movie and Jesse L. Martin picked up his part, The Hollywood Reporter says another Law & Order actor has been added to the mix. According to the news source, S. Epatha Merkerson will play Alberta Gaye, Marvin’s mother, in the Julien Temple-directed film.
It seems controversy will follow the flick right up until the end, as filming is set to begin in late March. Marvin Gaye III was the first to object to the project, expressing disapproval of the focus on his father’s depression and drug use in the ’80s. It was these objections that caused his friend Lenny Kravitz to back out of the flick. According to THR, the film is now supposed to start with Marvin Gaye’s attempt to get his career back on track with the help of Freddy Cousaert, a part-time concert promoter. Cousaert will be played by actor Brendan Gleeson.
Even with Lenny out and Jesse in, and a different starting point for the biopic, some members of the Gaye family still object to the film. The latest person to speak out against the movie is his ex, Janis Hunter, who was married to Marvin from 1977-1981. She claims this movie is the last thing her ex-husband would have wanted and that his spirit is not happy right now. Regardless of the objections the Gaye family may have, I think with actors like Martin and Merkerson, we can be sure they will at least do justice to Marvin’s life story.
