Whether you’re a rap fan or not, you’ve probably at least come across the rap line “You wasn’t with me shooting in the gym,” being quoted on social media sites. In case you may be unaware of where the popularly quoted phrase came from, it is actually a line from Drake’s verse in Rick Ross’ Stay Schemin song where Drake references the controversy surrounding the massive sum of money that Kobe would have had to hand over to his wife Vanessa back when the two almost divorced. Since the release of the song, Kobe fans have been known to chant the phrase to demonstrate their support for the Lakers shooting guard. Up until now, Vanessa has been pretty quiet regarding the song’s lyrics. She recently took to her Instagram account to respond to a few people who brought the quote back to her attention as well as express her feelings regarding the phrase and the people who constantly quote it.
“I love when immature kids quote a rapper that has never been friends with Kobe and knows nothing about our relationship. Just shows how gullible they are. I don’t need to be in the gym. I’m raising our daughters, signing checks and taking care of everything else that pertains to our home life…”
“I really wish people would stop THINK and then realize that they are being sucked into someone’s clear intention to monetize and gain attention off of our family’s heartache. This is real life. I hold down our home life so my husband can focus on his career. It’s a partnership.”
“Since my husband is isn’t friends with Drake, we received a text of an apology forwarded from his manager. It’s done and over with and it’s now time for people to THINK before speaking.”
I certainly agree with Vanessa’s stance that marriage is indeed a partnership; however this all just goes back to the age-old debate surrounding the amount of money a woman should be awarded upon her divorce from her husband. According to Necole Bitchie, Drake has openly expressed that it was just a song and was never meant to offend Vanessa or Kobe.
“That line came from a conversation about being this young and making this much money and the fear of losing it all. I just used his potential situation to address my own life. I never intended to offend Vanessa or anyone else.”
As usual any bad blood between the Bryants and Drake appears to be non-existant, but of course, the public continues to fuel the drama.
