I’m a sucker for romantic comedies; battle of the sexes and chick flicks with all-Black casts are actually my weakness. But that doesn’t take away from my love for the same types of films with predominately White casts, which I find to be equally entertaining At the end of the day, love is love, regardless of race and I know I’m not the only one out there who loves Love Jones just as much as, say, The Notebook. Check out this list of popular rom-coms that have predominantly White casts but are on plenty of black folks’ “favorite move” lists.
The Breakup
First of all, Vince Vaughn is absolutely hilarious; but a movie where a couple breaks up and are both too stubborn to move out of the apartment they share? Well, that’s genius. Many love this flick for its witty humor and sarcasm. Of course we realize that in real life living with en ex after a breakup probably isn’t even half as funny. In fact, it’s probably the exact opposite. Despite it’s humor, it delivered a true-to-life depiction of how a relationship looks as it becomes unglued.
The Notebook
Ahhh, Noah and Aly. This is by far one of the sweetest love stories I’ve ever seen depicted on the big screen. What I believe people love most about this movie is that like most couples in real life, Noah and Aly did not have the perfect relationship and they faced many obstacles, but true love conquered all. I always find myself reaching for the tissue box at the end of this one.
Clueless
When people think of Clueless, romance isn’t the first thing that comes to mind, mainly because the storyline revolves around a really pampered Beverly Hills teen who is trying to find herself. However, if you delve deeper into the plot, there actually are a few love stories, the most noted one being at the end when Cher realizes that she’s in love with Josh — majorly, totally, and butt crazy in love. Isn’t it funny how love sometimes hits you where and when you least expect it?
She’s All That
The school’s biggest jock accepting a bet to turn the class nerd into the most popular girl in school and then falling in love with her sounds like such a cliche and predictable plot, yet somehow the producers nailed it to make this movie a favorite as well as a classic.
Bridget Jones’s Diary
Bridget Jones’s Diary was such a hit because so many felt like Bridget was a relatable character. Who hasn’t at one point or another found themselves needing to make a change in their lives? Many of us have even kept diaries at one point or another, but to hear those diary entries out loud, which depicts many of our innermost thoughts on a television screen is absolutely hilarious.
10 Things I Hate About You
10 Things I Hate About You is one of those infamous teen romantic comedies that tells the story of two social outcasts who get together under dishonest and insincere circumstances but eventually find love in each other anyway. This film sometimes feels like dingy and mindless entertainment, yet somehow we can’t get enough of it.
Jerry Maguire
Watching Jerry fall in love with Dorothy as he develops a relationship with her son as well as revives his career after being fired from his sports agency is priceless. Seeing his character grow during the movie is heartwarming.
Love Actually
Nothing warms hearts more than a romantic holiday flick. What’s so unique about this movie is that the storyline follows the lives of so many different couples from varying walks of lives, it makes it almost impossible not to relate.
Dirty Dancing
This movie is an absolute classic that is difficult not to love. This coming of age tale follows the life of Baby who, one summer, somehow finds herself through her relationship with her dance instructor and love of dance. I believe it’s the passion that keeps us all sucked in.
Ghost
This is an absolutely beautiful love story with a supernatural twist that says true love is even stronger than death. It is difficult not to shed a tear or two for this one.
Grease
I like to believe that this extremely popular stage play turned motion picture is what set the stage for the new age movies that depict high school romance. How can anyone not love this movie with its witty punchlines and catchy songs?
He’s Just Not That Into You
He’s Just Not That Into You is by far one of my favorite romantic comedies. It provides a hilarious, yet true-to-life depiction of the struggle with men and women attempting to understand each other’s intentions as well as women and their sometimes poor ability to sense when a man simply is not that interested in them.
How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days
Another one of my favorite romantic comedies that follows a magazine columnist and an advertising executive whose paths cross after she is assigned an article called “How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days.” Doing all the things that women commonly do to drive men away and making a bet with friends that you can get the next woman you meet to fall in love with you sounds like a recipe for disaster, but in the process the two find love in each other.
Bridesmaids
The sidesplitting humor that is delivered throughout this movie will leave you in tears as the story’s lead protagonist’s life becomes seemingly unglued once she becomes her best friend’s bridesmaid. The plot also seems to deliver a life lesson as Annie learns to take responsibility for her life and finds love in the process.
