Random But Awesome News: “Boy Meets World” Spin-off Confirmed, And Cory And Topanga Are Back!

November 27, 2012  |

As much as I’m not a fan of people trying to reboot classic shows and movies from the past for present day monetary gain, I can’t help but be excited about the return of “Boy Meets World”! Or, er, make that “Girl Meets World.”

The reboot of the ’90s classic will bring back Ben Savage, who played Cory Matthews, as well as Danielle Fishel, who played Cory’s love, Topanga. But this time, according to Entertainment Weekly, the show will focus on Cory and Topanga’s 13-year-old daughter, Riley, and her adventures with her best friend, Maya. There is currently a search underway to find who will play Riley on “Girl Meets World,” and the show will be put together by original “Boy Meets World” creator, Michael Jacobs. News of the spin-off was confirmed by Savage through his Twitter and Fishel through her Tumblr, where she most recently posted about her hopes for the show, saying, ” I promise with the entirety of my heart that we will make GMW with the same honesty, innocence, and intelligence that you learned to expect from BMW.”

But she also made it clear that folks shouldn’t expect “Girl Meets World” to start where “Boy Meets World” left off or anything like that. Don’t expect to see continuous appearances from the homie Shawn, and I’m pretty sure Mr. Feeny will be a no show. Make that a HELL NO show. But Fishel does say that fans will like what they see:

I say that so that I can say this: GMW is a new show.  It isn’t BMW brought back to life but in current day.  It will have familiar faces, familiar themes, and familiar messages.  It will also have new faces, new themes, and new messages.

Well, either way, as a former TGIF stan and big fan of “Boy Meets World,” which ran from 1993-2000, I can say that I’m very excited to hear about the return of two of my favorite TV characters. I’m sure the show will be on some Disney ish and what not, which means I probably won’t tune in on the regular, but I’m all for talented people from my favorite shows getting a check in this economy.

Are you excited to hear about the confirmed “Girl Meets World” spinoff? Do you think it will be on the level of “Boy Meets World”?
