Travel Abroad: The Silk Road Leads to Istanbul, Turkey

Things to Know Before You Go

Roundtrip economy class flights from most major cities to Istanbul range from $500 to $2600 depending on time of year.

The Neorion Hotel, Hotel Amira, and Sirkeci Konak Hotel rank 1, 2 and 3 respectively on Trip Advisor with rates ranging from $125 to 180 and up.

Don’t leave home without your Turkish-English dictionary. Most signs are posted in Turkish only, as are announcements on the subway. Many of the city’s residents don’t speak English either.

Getting Around
A Metro ride from the airport to the city costs three Turkish Lira (TRY); a taxi will set you back about 15 TRY.

Spending Money
You can haggle prices down at traditional markets, certain shops, and with street side vendors.

Much like the East Coast of the US, Istanbul gets increasingly hot and humid from May through August, and successively colder September through February.
