I have been having fun with cornrows and flat twists throughout my hair evolution. They have gone from straight back cornrows to the intricate designs that you see today. From two-strand flat twists for twist out purposes to just flat twists for a style.

If you want to get a good break and are looking for a protective style, I would say that cornrows and flat twists are the easiest to upkeep. Not necessarily the easiest to learn, but the upkeep is worth learning how to do them. (Get on youtube!)

After you wash your hair, moisturize your hair with an oil moisturizer or crème. Take a rat tail comb to make precise parts in your hair and start braiding or twisting. Make sure to be very careful with your edges- after all, the point of Protective Styles are to protect the hair and not aid it in breakage.

You can cleanse your scalp if you need to or if your scalp starts itching by taking some oil, put it on a Q-tip and lightly rub it on your scalp along the braids or twists. This will allow you to keep them in longer without the feeling of needing to take them down. They can last a good 2 weeks if you take care of them. Put on a satin bonnet or scarf to prevent them from frizzing up.

I STILL don’t know how to cornrow well, but I can definitely hook some flat twists up!  Practice up and work on your protective styles!!
