Q&A: Life Enrichment Consultant Talks Branding and Business Empowerment

April 23, 2012  |

Can you elaborate on what empowerment marketing is since it’s been a big part of your company?

The concept of empowerment marketing is understanding how people thrive and how people respond to being empowered. If you utilize that in the concept of marketing you encourage customer engagement and loyalty.

ME Unlimited encourages corporations to focus on maximizing human potential and interaction through employee development. Do you think that businesses overlook this aspect most of the time and just focus on what people can offer from a business standpoint?

Yes, I think that one of the mistakes people make is not investing in employee development inside of a work environment. Your employees should feel empowered, supported and also trusted to make decisions. They feel more loyal to the company and mission. When a company becomes more than a job, it becomes a movement they’re a part of. That’s what most people want, especially women employees. They want unity and to feel as though what they’re doing means something and is valued. Whether you’re a small business or a large corporation, you must invest in employee development. If you don’t, you’re creating an opportunity for lack of productivity to be the norm.

You come from a law background, but what turned you onto marketing, business and branding?

For me I was just natural at it, it was a gut instinct. Part of what makes you good in business is intuition. Twelve years ago I launched marshawnevans.com. I was still in college and I had just competed in the Miss America pageant. When I won Miss D.C., the owners of the pageant purchased marshawnevans.com. I never really thought about owning my own name until someone bought it away from me. When I was competing in the Miss America pageant, other women would ask me to help them with their platforms. I just had a natural ability to create messaging that resonates well with people  —also I was able to package a message that was convincing and had natural expression of self.
