Style Spotlight: Shingai Shoniwa of the Noisettes and her Afrocentric Flair
Even if you haven’t heard of London-born Shingai Shoniwa before, chances are you’ve seen her stylistic choices and gorgeous head of natural hair floating around the web. As front woman of the Noisettes, this Zimbabwean beauty is known for being quite adventurous when it comes to both her musical performances and her wardrobe. Let’s face it, details like feathered shoulders are kind of hard to miss.
Shoniwa gravitates toward clothing that shows off her small waist, extensive headpiece collection, and her love of bright colors. Yet, what we love most about Shingai’s look is that she manages to embrace and exude multiple style vibes simultaneously. This is no easy feat, just ask any of the poorly dressed celebs included on this list. Still, Miss Shoniwa combines afrocentric, futuristic, and feminine elements flawlessly! We considered deeming her “trendy”as well, but that word would be an understatement for a woman that sets trends, rather than following them.
View our slideshow as we praise some of Shingai Shoniwa’s most visually pleasing looks. Just keep an open mind, and prepare to be inspired…
Structure. Structure. Structure. Apparently, Shingai can’t get enough of it! She is a huge fan of structured jackets and embellished shoulders. Just take a look at that tangerine cropped jacket and try to disagree. We dare you! Combined with a black skirt – that just so happens to be other-worldly – it all makes for a beautiful outfit. As if we need our mind blown any further, she finished with strappy sandals and a bright bag. Impressive…
This look is fun and just screams SPRING! Her outfit also tells us that this indie-rock diva is not afraid to experiment with color. She’s reworking primary colors with a long yellow gown, blue belt, blue heels, and a coral oversized clutch. Lest us not overlook her matching blue and coral headpiece. So fly!
Carrying an umbrella is quite a statement-maker when it’s not raining. This outfit is comprised of neutrals, but due to an array of textures found in the bustier, pants, and jacket, it is safe from falling flat. Aubrun boots and a matching purse are cute pops of color. Shingai pulls this one off well!
Haute mama! Bright pink is a bold choice for an already bold mini dress. Again, Shingai rocks a plunging neckline and structured shoulders. Peep-toe metallic shoes and cuff complete the look.
Another neutral dress wows us! The embellishments provide funky texture and she keeps things classy with gold low-heeled pumps. Shingai sure can pose, can’t she?
Shingai keeps things blue with this look! This makeshift jumpsuit is giving us genie and Madonna at once, but – for probably the first time in history – that isn’t a bad thing. Adding a printed shoe and oversized clutch just adds to the fun, but it’s the huge gold scarf that steals the show. L-O-V-E!
Yes, those are blue suede thigh-high boots. For most folks, these boots are a deal breaker, but Shingai’s confidence forces us to believe that they work. Her burgundy blazer, thick belt, statement necklace and large cocktail ring are all standout features of the outfit as well. In this case, more is more!
These psychedelically printed pants are everything! There’s her signature bustier making its appearance, and when paired with black booties, it all comes together with a rock-n-roll touch. Her rounded specs give us a vintage vibe and those earrings are the only color she needs. Why can’t we all be this cool?
Even all black looks fresh on her! Again, Miss Shoniwa plays with texture. Bright orange earrings and a blue hair clip are subtle, yet prominent parts of the look. Her pose and large handbag work together to suggest “It Girl” status, but the truth is: she had us at the sequined top.
This is Shingai’s version of evening wear and we like! The dress’s ice blue color looks gorgeous against her skin. She’s rocking cutouts and the sculptural trend like a pro! The floral accents are a bit prom-ish, but it’s just so hard to fault her! At any rate, she has our vote for queen.
