Record Replay: Artists We Want to Hear From Again

My music loving heart just can’t and won’t let some artists go.  A few times a week, I’m on the hunt for new artists to fall in love with (musically speaking, of course) but in the meantime, my mp3 player always goes back to people I love.

These are a few artists who we haven’t had an album from in quite some time – some you know and some you may have forgotten about – and hopefully, they’ll grace us again.

I swear, don’t EVEN get me started on Tweet and my love for her.  Industry politics aside, I can’t understand why she hasn’t really leaked any random songs and it behooves me as to why we haven’t seen her do many shows. Seriously, It’s Me Again was released in 2005 and there hasn’t really been one piece of music since. She’s been promising a new album for I don’t know how long and has recently signed a deal with MC Lyte’s new label, DuBose Music Group, but I’m not sure that means anything. I’ll always have my fingers crossed.

Floetry

This has single-handedly been MY biggest music heartbreak in terms of groups breaking up.  I listen to at least one Floetry song at least once a day and though they’ve broken up for about five to six years, I don’t think I’ll ever give up hope on the idea of them getting back together and releasing good music.  They’re both okay as solo artists (I actually like Natalie The Floacist’s album way more than Marsha The Songstress’ album) but there is nothing like hearing them together.  Who would have known that poetry and singing together could work so seamlessly?

Donnie

I’m not sure how many of you are/were familiar with Donnie but almost 10 years ago, he released an album called The Colored Section which featured a song called “Cloud Nine.” I wore this album OUT and couldn’t wait for him to follow it up with something else. It happened in 2007 with The Daily News that not many even knew was released. I have no idea where he is or what ended up happening with his record label situation but I do know that he had one of those “velvet” voices I miss.

Faith Evans

Can someone please tell me what’s going on with FayeFaye? I know Something About Faith came out in 2010 and because it was on an independent label, it was hard to promote. But, she’s been known for quality music and I think it was missing from that album.  We need Faye in the studio with some good writers and producers (even if they are fairly unknown) who understands that voice.  I’m hoping she’ll release something good again one day.

Eve

As much as I wanted to believe Eve’s verse on Luda’s “My Chick Bad” remix was preparing us for her comeback, I just knew better than to get my hopes all up.  Even when we watched “Behind the Music” on VH1 and she talked about getting in the studio and releasing the album, all I could do was deep sigh.  Eve is one of the best female rappers to come out over the last 10+ years (yes, I said it) and yet, I think she’s over it.  A few years ago, she hit that California living and has never looked back. She keeps a millionaire boyfriend and seemingly is like, “Rap? Music? What’s that?”  Maybe a petition for her to release one album is what she needs to set her on the straight and narrow? Or maybe I just need to give it up? Probably the latter…

Van Hunt

Okay, so I was ready to go into this long rant about Van Hunt having not put out an album since 2006 and was going to question if he could just release something independent since he’s ALWAYS doing shows. It turns out that he did release What Were You Hoping For? last September.  I’ll be honest: I’ve never been a huge fan of Van but I recognize talent and some people you just want to see succeed. He happens to be one of those folks to me.  But, I know he’s has been through a lot of album changes and maybe that has him a bit jaded (rightfully so) and so touring, is the best bet for him.

Amel Larrieux

Queen Mother of Juices and Berries, WHERE IS YOUR ALBUM?! Like Van Hunt, Amel is always doing a show somewhere so she makes sure her fans know she’s still on the radar. But really, we’ve been waiting on album for five years (last I heard it was going to be called Ice Cream Everyday) and she keeps telling us to be patient because she’s working on it but…I’m tired of waiting!  Maybe she needs a few months off the road so she can focus on it. Do this for your fans, Amel!

Martin Luther

Are you guys familiar with Martin Luther McCoy?  He’s a funk-soul singer who is just…awesome.  I randomly heard a song by him about 9 or 10 years ago and I’ve stanned for him ever since.  He is a completely independent artist, having released his last album in 2004 on his own label, Rebel Soul Records. I got excited early last year because he was on “The Mo’Nique Show” doing new music and talking about the release of a new album.  Of course, it didn’t come out like he said it would but he did put something out on bandcamp which I can only assume is new music.  Also, he did a cover of The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” that many people love…and have no idea who it is.  I’ll always be on the lookout for new music from him…even if it never happens.

Kelis

Who doesn’t love a good Kelis song?!  Even when it seems like the song should have never been created, it usually somehow works for her.  Her last album Flesh Tone may not have been what the masses liked but she was trying to appeal to a dance and techno crowd. She claims we’ll get a new album from her this year but honestly, I’m not holding my breath.  I am, however, still going to hold out hope for her.

Who else  would you want to hear from?
